Silas choked out the words. August and Clara jumped in to smooth things over.

After the gala, Clara walked me to my room.

The largest bedroom on the east side of the third floor had been redone.

Light linens. A wall of closets. A brand-new laptop and textbooks on the desk.

Clara said carefully, “This was Elowen’s room. She said you’d just gotten back and should have the one with the best light.”

When I didn’t speak, she added, “If you don’t like it, we can switch.”

“This one’s fine.”

I set my bag down.

“Where did she move?”

Clara blinked. “The guest suite at the end of the hall.”
