Reborn: Revenge On My Wife & Her Fake Confidant Chapter 03 The Crash Was No Accident

After leaving the house, I moved into the place Riley had prepared for me.

I had barely settled in when the hospital sent another payment reminder.

A message from Vanessa arrived immediately afterward.

“Since you’re so determined to divorce me, I’ll keep my word. I just wonder whether your father will still be alive by the time you can afford his treatment.”

She had always assumed I could not survive without her.

She had always been certain I would never truly leave.

I blocked her and deleted her contact.

What she did not know was that Riley had already transferred enough money into my account to cover an entire year of my father’s treatment.

I threw myself into investigating the bridge.

After three days and three nights without real sleep, I finally found the first crack in the mountain of paperwork.

My company was the contractor.

Vanessa was the investor.

And Mason was the nobody she had forced onto my project team.

What I had never imagined was that Mason had been taking kickbacks behind my back.

The procurement records showed that huge amounts of rebar and cement had been cut from the orders.

The degree of corner-cutting was horrifying.

No wonder the bridge had collapsed only one week after opening to traffic.

I organized every piece of evidence and immediately drove toward the police station.

A piercing horn suddenly blasted beside me.

I turned just as a massive truck came barreling into the side of my car as though it had lost control.

BANG!

The impact hurled my car several yards away.

It rolled once before finally coming to a stop.

The metallic stink of blood flooded my mouth and nose.

Pain tore through my body so violently I almost blacked out.

Through the shattered window, I saw Mason strolling toward me without the slightest hurry.

I tried to pull myself free.

My legs were trapped.

Every attempt to move sent another wave of agony through my entire body

“What… are you doing?”

Mason smiled.

His voice was almost playful.

“Isn’t it obvious, Mr. Cole?”

He planted his shoe against my face and ground down harder.

“You should blame yourself for refusing the easy way out. Why couldn’t you just get divorced and take the fall?”

His shoe twisted against my skin.

“Why did you have to go digging for the truth?”

His face contorted.

“Do you have any idea what happens to me if you expose this?”

His voice suddenly sharpened into something vicious.

“I don’t want to die. So you’re the one who has to!”

At some point, he had picked up an iron bar.

He swung it down without another word.

For an instant, I thought I heard my own bones crack.

Then pain swallowed everything.

Brakes screamed somewhere behind him.

A second later, I heard Vanessa’s frantic voice.

Blood streamed down my head.

I forced myself to stay conscious and looked at her, silently begging her to help me.

The first words out of her mouth killed whatever hope I had left.

“Mason! Are you okay? Did you get hurt? Do you understand that if anyone finds out about this, you could go to prison?”

Her words came faster.

“I told you to leave everything to me! You didn’t have to take this kind of risk!”

Every trace of panic in her voice was for him.

It only made my own situation more pathetic.

I clenched my teeth.

“Why?”

Only then did Vanessa seem to notice me.

Something complicated flashed through her eyes.

“Adrian, you’re my husband. You have me. No matter what happens, I do love you.”

She looked back at Mason.

“But Mason is different. He’s still young. He can’t have even one stain on his record.”

Then she turned those words into a bargain.

“Stop investigating. Go to the police and turn yourself in. Take responsibility for the missing construction materials. If you do that, I won’t hold what happened between you and that bitch Riley against you anymore. I’ll even make sure your father is taken care of.”

I laughed.

The laughter hurt.

Then tears slipped from the corners of my eyes.

Vanessa was actually using my father’s life to force me to confess to something I had never done.

The last illusion I still had about her shattered.

“No.”

She paused, then raised her voice.

“Adrian Cole, what more do you want? At worst, you’ll spend a few years in prison. They’ll be over before you know it. If that’s still not enough, I’ll give you another $200,000. Is that enough for you?”

Her lip curled.

“You’re unbelievably greedy.”

My fists tightened.

I forced each word out slowly.

“Keep dreaming.”

Vanessa exploded.

She kicked me directly in my already injured head.

The pointed heel drove into the open wound.

Then she twisted it again and again.

“Who gave you the nerve to speak to me like that? Riley?”

Her anger climbed with every sentence.

“I knew it. You’ve been plotting with her for a long time! No wonder the hospital called and said the account had already been paid.”

She sneered down at me.

“Adrian, you’re disgusting. Did you sell your body to her for your father’s medical bills?”

Her voice grew louder.

“Fine. If you refuse to do this the easy way, we’ll do it the hard way. We’ll make it look like yourself because you knew you were guilty.”

Then she turned to Mason and softened instantly.

“Relax. As long as I’m here, you won’t get a single drop of blood on your hands.”

With that, she went back to her car.

Mason laughed wildly.

“See? I’m the one Vanessa cares about most.”

He looked down at me with contempt.

“You’re nothing but a shadow. Someone born to spend his whole life in the mud. Taking the blame for me is probably the only chance a man like you will ever get to be useful.”

His grin widened.

“After you’re dead, I’ll take your woman and your property. I’ll enjoy the life you should’ve had for you.”

The pain had already blurred my consciousness.

I no longer had the strength to answer him.

An engine started nearby.

Blood covered my eyes.

Through the red haze, I saw the huge dark shape of the car rushing straight toward me.

Despair closed around my throat.

I had been given another life.

I had believed I could change the ending.

I pulled the corner of my mouth into a weak smile.

“Even if I die, neither of you will get the ending you want.”

Then another dark shape shot in from the side at terrifying speed.

There was no time to see what it was.

Only one deafening impact split the air.

BANG!
