Our Anniversary Trip Was Their Repeat Trip Chapter 09

Their secret romance is soon discovered, sparking a community-wide…

everything you told me was hurting you and make amends for it all.”

“We’ll go back to California. This time, I won’t be thinking about the past, and there won’t be

anyone else. It will only be you and me.”

“Don’t break up with me. Please?”

Ethan probably hadn’t felt this nervous in a very long time.

His heartbeat pounded louder and louder.

But from the time I was a teenager until today, the person I’d loved most had bowed his head and begged me to stay. And in that moment, I still chose to refuse.

“I want us to be over.”

When we were students, girls often slipped past Ethan’s classroom just to catch a glimpse of him.

They’d been lovestruck as they whispered about the unspoken chemistry between Ethan and Olivia. I had listened along with them.

Later, Ethan and Olivia moved across the country, and plenty of people still followed the updates they posted online.

I still remembered what happened when I was in college.

Someone forwarded me a picture Olivia had posted of herself skiing with Ethan.

She wrote,

“They look so happy together.”

I had just finished class that day. I still remembered how beautiful the sunset had been, the sky glowing with color.

But my heart had twisted into a knot.

“I’ve been watching the two of you for a long time.”

“A spectator was never supposed to step onto the field.”

“I don’t want to see you every day for the rest of my life and remember all these moments that still feel lodged in my throat.”

“I don’t want to gamble the rest of my life on how much space Olivia still occupies in your heart.”

“I don’t want to keep wasting my feelings on comparisons and resentment.”

‘So let’s leave it here.”

“Let me finally set myself free.”

Ethan was silent for a long time before saying,

“I’ll wait.”

“I’ll wait for the day you’re willing to open your heart to me again.”

I said nothing. I walked around him and kept going.

Later, I went to see another stretch of ocean by myself.

There, I watched a whale’s back cut through the water before it leaped high into the air, sending wave after wave crashing outward.

Even the crew said I was lucky. Somehow, I saw more than twenty breaches in a row.

The tears fell before I could speak.

I smiled and chimed in.

“Yeah. I really am lucky.”

The day finally came when I didn’t have to wait for anyone to come with me. I found the whales on

my own.
