My Family Saved Their Adopted Daughter First, Then I Died Before Their Eyes Chapter 06

“Claire, wake up!”

Ethan lunged to the bedside and started CPR on my rigid chest.

“Get the blood from the observation room. Hurry!”

Noah didn’t move.

“She’s already dead. Her circulation has completely stopped. If you transfuse her now, the blood will just run

back out through the open wound. None of this is going to save her. You’re only trying to run from the

decision you made.”

Ethan refused to stop.

“I’m the ER medical director. I’m ordering you to get the blood!”

His tears fell onto my face, and with every compression, what little blood remained seeped from the wound

and stained his sleeves red.

Richard slid down the wall until he was sitting on the floor.

“How did she get a penetrating wound?”

He suddenly pulled out his phone.

“This is the maintenance contractor’s fault. I’m calling the police. I want the footage from the scene!”

He called the park’s head of security and demanded that the surveillance footage be pulled immediately.

There was a brief silence on the other end before the man answered.

“Richard, the police are already reviewing it. The external rescue footage shows that while you were operating the hydraulic rescue arm, your angle shifted and you severed a load–bearing section of the adjacent gondola. A deformed steel beam then pierced the passenger’s abdomen.”

The phone slipped from Richard’s hand.

Its screen struck the threshold and shattered into a web of cracks.

I floated above them, watching him finally face the record of what he had done.

I felt no sympathy at all.

He was the one who had aimed the rescue arm at Lily’s gondola.

His mistake had damaged the load–bearing structure.

I had already told him my gondola was about to fall.

But he had said that because I was his biological daughter, I had to be rescued last.

Now he finally understood that his own actions had caused the wound.

Laura covered her mouth and stumbled out of the trauma room.

More than ten minutes later, she came back carrying a strawberry cake.

She knelt beside the bed and placed the box next to my hand.

“Claire, this was your favorite cake when you were little. Get up and have a bite. I won’t blame you for making

a mess in the lobby anymore, and I won’t accuse you of trying to compete with Lily for our attention again.”

She tried to pry open my stiff fingers, and the bottom of the cake box picked up blood from the floor.

I stared at the cake, unable to understand how she could still think this counted as an apology.

Every time they chose Lily at my expense, Laura would buy me a strawberry cake and act as though that

settled everything.

As if something sweet could make up for what they had done.

But she had forgotten that when I was ten, I broke out in a rash after eating strawberry cake, struggled to breathe, and nearly suffocated.

I told her I was allergic to strawberries.

She said Lily could eat them, so why couldn’t I, and decided I was only being difficult.

I never touched strawberries again after that.

She still didn’t know her own daughter.

Not even when I died.

Noah stepped forward, pulled Ethan away from my chest, and moved the cake aside.

“Enough. Let her have some peace. When she was alive, none of you listened to a word she said. The least you can do now is stop dumping your guilt onto her.”

Ethan collapsed onto the floor and buried his face in both hands.
