Whatever insult Vanessa had been about to throw at me died in her throat.

She glared at me, then spotted the bag on my desk. With a nasty little laugh, she marched over and snatched it up.

“You’re such a liar. That’s a high-end designer bag. Adrian bought it for you, didn’t he? You expect me to believe he’d buy you a bag like this, then stick you on an e-bike and rent you some dump?”

She yanked it open and dumped the contents onto my desk. A small square packet tumbled out with everything else.

Vanessa picked it up between two fingers, her lip curling.

“Why do you carry these around? Are you always this reckless?”

Laughter erupted around us.

“She acts innocent in public, but people wonder what she’s really after in this relationship.”

“She wouldn’t have gotten those nice things without being close to him.”

Someone shoved a phone close enough to film both the packet and my face.

I raised a hand to block the camera, but there were phones pointed at me from every direction. I sighed and pointed to the logo on my bag.

“It says Mimi, not the famous designer brand. This was a very affordable find. Much better deal.”

I took the packet from her and tore it open, pulling out two disposable gloves.

Someone murmured.

“They were extras from a seafood boil I ordered. It would be wasteful to throw them away…”

No one said a word.

After a long moment, someone finally asked, “Did she get the wrong woman?”

Vanessa grabbed a handful of my things and flung them at me.

“Do you even know who I am, Chloe Carter? I’m Adrian Hale’s fiancée. A Sinclair. You think this little act is going to get you off the hook?”

“One phone call, and I’ll know exactly what you own.”

My eyes widened, and I waved both hands.

“No, no. You don’t need to do that…”

Vanessa smirked. “Scared now? Then return everything you received and keep your distance from Adrian.”

I pulled out my phone.

“I meant you don’t need to bother anyone else. I can just show you.”

I held up the screen.
