As other girlfriends went, I never asked for much.

Other girls asked their partners for large sums each month. I sent mine a payment request for a simple lunch special.

Other girls took theirs shopping at designer boutiques. I took Adrian Hale, heir to the Hale family, to a flea market where multiple T-shirts were sold together at a low price.

Eventually, Adrian Hale couldn’t take it anymore. He asked if I could please want something expensive for once.

I worked up my courage and asked, “Could you buy me a Volt?”

Adrian looked baffled. “What’s that, some imported car?”

“It’s an e-bike.” I answered blankly.

Maybe being this low-maintenance had its perks. Adrian actually fell for me, and I moved from casual dating to his girlfriend.

I’d even heard he was secretly planning to propose.

Then his first love came home from overseas.

She went straight from the airport to my office and started shouting.

“Which one of you is Chloe Carter? Come out here!”

“You’re after his wealth! Cars, houses, luxury possessions—you’ve taken so much from him! Well, now you’re going to cough it all up!”

I stared at her for a moment before pulling out the keys to my e-bike and my run-down rental apartment.

“This is all I’ve got,” I said, holding them out. “I already ate the takeout he paid for, though. Do I have to cough that up too?”

Vanessa Sinclair snatched the keys out of my hand with a sneer.

“Let’s see what kind of car you managed to squeeze out of him.”

She turned the fob over, studying the V logo beneath the buttons.

“What brand is this?”

My coworkers leaned in for a look.

“Why does that key look exactly like the one for my e-bike? What kind of luxury car copies an e-bike key?”

“I think that’s a Volt key. I ride one too.”

Vanessa’s expression stiffened. She glared at me.

“Are you messing with me, Chloe? Adrian would never buy you something that cheap.”

That offended me.

“It’s not cheap! It was nearly the highest price for this newest model. It’s pink, and it unlocks with an app. It’s very high-tech.”

Vanessa clearly didn’t believe me. Her glare hardened as she held up the old house key.

“Then what’s this piece of junk? Don’t tell me it’s for a house Adrian bought you.”

Something seemed to occur to her, and her voice rose.

“Did Adrian buy you a mansion?”

Everyone around us froze and looked at me with envy and doubt.

“A mansion? That must be incredibly valuable. Chloe always acts innocent. No one expected she was that greedy.”

“Well, she’s chasing his fortune. She has to grab what she can before he leaves her.”

“And now his real partner’s here to take it all back.”

They weren’t even trying to hide how much they were enjoying this.

“Oh,” I said, then answered honestly. “We did look at a mansion, but Adrian said it didn’t have enough privacy, so we didn’t rent it.”

“We ended up renting a little place in an old building on the Eastside. He only agreed to that one after I talked him into it. That key belongs to the landlord, though. You can’t take it. I have to give it back when I move out.”

I held out my hand, then reluctantly added, “You can keep the e-bike, I guess… but you’ll have to give me back my helmet and handlebar mitts. Those are mine.”
