Later, I went home.

I went to Grandma’s house.

But someone leaked the news.

My parents showed up.

They forced smiles, looking at me and asking, “Wren, do you have enough money?”

“Why haven’t you accepted any of the money we sent you?”

They tried to use money to fix our relationship.

But they didn’t know that every time they transferred money, it reminded me of my high school

days, eating plain rolls in the cafeteria and fainting from hunger on the track field.

I turned my head and said calmly, “When I needed you most, you left me in Indiana.”

“Remember the day we were supposed to do my paperwork?”

“I waited for you all day. I didn’t eat a single bite.”

“Of course, I wasn’t starving myself to make you feel bad.”

“I had no money in my account. When I told you, none of you responded.”

“I fainted. You didn’t even turn your heads.”

“Now, I don’t need you anymore.”

I took Grandma’s hand and walked past Mom and Dad, whose faces were pale.

Behind me, Mom and Dad cried.

They knew. This might be the last time they see me.

At the airport, Grandma still couldn’t believe it. She kept asking me, “Sweetie, I’m really going to the city?”

“I don’t know anyone. I’ll just cause trouble for you.”

I smiled. “You won’t, Grandma. I’m too lonely.”

“Stay with me.”

Of course Grandma would stay with me. She loved me most.

We were about to check in.

Madison rushed over.

She said, “Wren, your room at home is ready.”

“Next time you come, stay a few more days. Stay at home.”

Then she smiled at me, trying to please me.

I frowned.

She used to look down at me. She said I wasn’t part of the Hale family.

While I was confused, Madison leaned in and whispered:

“I heard you’re doing well in the city. Can I come with you?”

“I can help you clean.”

I laughed.

“You can clean? Impossible.”

“I was the one who cleaned your room.”

Before the plane took off, Mom and Dad asked when I was coming home next.
