The moment my mom saw me, she only made an even bigger scene.

“Everyone, this is my daughter! She actually went after her cousin’s husband!”

The lobby fell into dead silence for a second. Then whispers spread through the room like a wave, and every

pair of eyes turned toward me, measuring and judging.

I finally lost my patience. “Mom! Enough! What kind of mother destroys her own daughter’s reputation like

this?”

My mom scoffed. “What? You did it, but you don’t dare to admit it?”

“If you want me to stop talking, then get down on your knees and apologize to your cousin right now. Do it in front of everyone, and promise you’ll cut Joel off completely. No more contact. Ever.”

My chest heaved as I clenched my teeth. “So that’s what this is about?”

“I already made it clear to Joel, but he won’t let go. If Nina couldn’t keep him, that was on her. Why are you

taking it out on me?”

Furious, she raised her hand, ready to slap me again.

But this time, someone caught her wrist in midair. I looked up and saw Gavin.

My mom tried to yank her hand free, but he didn’t let go. Her face changed.

“Who are you? I’m dealing with my own daughter. Stay out of it!”

“I’m Valery’s husband. You’re assaulting my wife in public. I have every right to intervene.” Gavin’s voice was calm and even, but there was an unmistakable authority behind it.

My mom’s eyes widened. “Bullshit! Valery is my daughter. You think I wouldn’t know if she got married?”

She looked Gavin up and down and gave a mocking laugh. “Or did you come up with that excuse for her? I’m telling you, nobody gets to tell me how to discipline my own daughter!”

With that, she lunged at me again.

Gavin didn’t move but gave someone nearby a look. Two security guards immediately stepped forward, each taking one of my mom’s arms and escorting her outside.

My mom struggled the whole way, shouting insults as they dragged her from the lobby to the front doors.

“Valery, you little bitch! Just wait! I’m not letting this go!”

The glass doors finally muffled her voice. The lobby fell silent again.

I lowered my head, unable to hold back the tears any longer.

Gavin walked over, gently put an arm around my shoulders, and wiped the tears from the corner of my eyes

with his thumb.

“Why are you crying again?” he asked with a helpless smile. “I promised your grandma I’d take care of you. I don’t want to see you crying every day.”

That only made me cry harder.

Just then, my boss hurried downstairs. The moment he saw Gavin, his expression changed, and he

immediately started apologizing.

That’s when I found out why Gavin was here.

As the company’s largest investor, he’d come to the company to discuss a business partnership.

No wonder my boss treated him with extreme deference. And once everyone learned who I was to him, the

atmosphere changed just as quickly.

No one dared gossip about what had happened again..
