The nurse nodded thoughtfully. “I see.”

“The ENT examination order has already been issued. I’ll come get you when it’s almost her turn.”

“As for the brain scan, that’s up to you. Once you’ve decided, go tell the attending physician. If you

don’t know where to find him, just ask us at the nurses’ station.”~

Ethan stared intently at Elaine, nodded, and said:

“I understand. Thank you, nurse.”

The nurse left.

He stood bent over at the side of the bed, looking at Elaine’s pale face, and murmured:

“I’m sorry, Elaine, I’m really sorry…”

“If I’d known you’d actually been in a car accident, I would have rushed over right away.

“It’s all my fault. When you wake up, you can scold me or punish me however you want.”

“I shouldn’t have said those awful things. I’m sorry, Elaine…”

His gaze slowly shifted to the nightstand, where Elaine’s cell phone lay.

The screen wasn’t cracked; there were just blood fingerprints on both the phone case and the

screen.

You could imagine just how dangerous it was at the time.

Ethan’s heart gave another sharp twinge.

Derek finished taking care of the paperwork and came back; the first thing he said as he sat by her

bedside was, “I’m sorry.”

His face was filled with self-reproach. “Elaine, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault.”

“Once you’re better, I promise I won’t hit back or talk back. Please wake up soon, okay?”

Just as Elaine was about to go for a thorough ENT examination, Jason arrived, panting heavily.

Derek looked at him. “Where’s Sabrina?”

Jason stared intently at the person in the hospital bed:

“She’s in the back-probably getting Elaine’s toiletries and a change of clothes.”

Derek’s gaze shifted once more.

“Elaine was in a car accident on her way to the train station; all her luggage is still in the car that

crashed.”

“Where is Sabrina going to get her toiletries and a change of clothes?”

Suddenly, a deathly silence fell among the three of them.

When I woke up, I had already completed the ENT examination.

There was still a buzzing in my ears, along with waves of sharp pain, and I couldn’t hear a thing.

Ethan, Derek, and Jason were all standing by.

The doctor noticed I had woken up and decided to talk to me about my condition first.

When he realized I couldn’t hear him, his expression grew serious, and he mouthed the words to

me while making a few gestures.

I shook my head.

Ethan and the others turned pale.

It turned out that what they thought was her not knowing how to act, her lies being pathetic, and

her voice sounding strange-

was actually because I couldn’t hear, which was why I didn’t know to control my volume and tone.

The doctor typed on the computer to reassure me:

“It’s no big deal. Don’t worry-just stay positive.”

“It’s just a serious complication from an ear infection; a minor surgery will fix it.”

I nodded as I read those few lines.

Derek anxiously kept asking me questions, but I ignored him.

When Ethan came to take my hand, I just stepped aside.

Jason bent down and looked at me with a somber expression, then held out his cell phone to me.

I turned my head away immediately, letting him know with my actions that I didn’t want to see.

Back in the ward, the three of them remained by my side the entire time.

I pulled my phone out from under my pillow, slowly typed out a line, and held it up in front of them.
