Derek kicked it away first, his voice icy. “Elaine, have you had enough of this?”

The suitcase hit the wall with a dull thud, then bounced back and fell over on the floor.

The four wheels rolled uselessly in the air.

It was as if the hopes I’d had before leaving had been dashed once again today—a bit ridiculous and a bit sad.

I looked at him. “Derek, what did I do wrong?”

He was clearly my own brother.

When I was little, he would take me out to play.

When other kids tried to pick on me, he would shield me with his body and take on five or six of them all by himself.

He was hit so hard that his nose started bleeding.

I was so scared I cried.

He smiled at me and said, “Don’t be afraid—a big brother is supposed to protect his little sister for the rest of his life!”

I didn’t know exactly when it started, but his attitude toward me gradually shifted, and he began to favor Sabrina more and more.

The protection that used to be there had long since faded away.

Jason was standing next to Sabrina, too, looking at me with disappointment.

“Elaine, when did you become so unreasonable?”

Sabrina let out a sob. “It’s all my fault…”

Before she could finish speaking, Derek pulled her into his arms.

“It’s Elaine who’s just too moody—it’s got nothing to do with you!”

He looked at me with a sneer. “You think just because you’re throwing a tantrum, we’re going to coddle you, huh?”

“I’ll tell you right now: if you want to leave, go ahead—none of us is going to try to placate you!”

“I don’t know where you picked up that lousy habit, but this time I’m going to cure you of it once and for all!”

With that, he grabbed Sabrina’s hand and headed for the door.

As he walked past me, he deliberately bumped into my shoulder.

I slammed into the wall, and felt a dull ache in my right shoulder.

Sabrina, her eyes swollen, asked, “Elaine bumped into…”

Before she could finish, Derek cut her off.

“She’s just putting on an act!”

“Ignore her—if you pay her any attention, she’ll just get more worked up!”

Derek took Sabrina by the hand and led her out.

Jason followed them out, and as he passed me, he sighed and said, “Elaine, you really need to think this through.”

Ethan brought up the rear.

As he walked toward me, he stopped in his tracks.

“Apologize to Sabrina right now, and then we’ll head to the next attraction as planned.”

I walked silently toward the suitcase.

He said, “Whatever you want,” and walked out.

The door closed, leaving me all alone.

But this time, I wasn’t sad; on the contrary, I felt relieved.
