The first time I saw her, I was a freshman in high school.

My father’s real estate empire was expanding, so we moved, and I was the

new kid.

On the first day, a group of upperclassmen had me cornered. Then she appeared, a flash of righteous fury, and planted herself in front of me.

“Is it fun for a group of you to gang up on one guy?”

Her voice was fierce. They laughed and stepped toward her.

So she didn’t hesitate–she grabbed a heavy textbook and swung it right at the leader’s face. She was a feral lioness, fearless and breathtaking.

They eventually backed off, yelling about how “Scarlett Pembroke is a psycho!”

We both ended up in detention.
