The Godfather’s Twenty Year Dream Was Her Chapter 06

He wore the restaurant’s black staff uniform, his eyes dark and sullen when they landed on me.

I suddenly remembered. Alistair had worked part-time here during high school.

He’d been desperate for cash—always had been.

His mom was sick and needed emergency surgery. So he studied by day, worked as an online gaming coach at night, and waited tables on weekends.

In my past life, my heart had ached for him. I’d worked alongside him too.

I burned my hand helping in the kitchen, and the scar never fully faded.

I pushed those old memories aside and ignored Alistair.

I slid the menu toward Rafael. “My treat today. Order whatever you want.”

Rafael had noticed Alistair too.

A shadow crossed his face, gone as quickly as it came. He smiled. “Not tonight. There’s someone I want you to meet. Dinner’s on me—you can get the next one.”

I was surprised he’d arranged to meet someone, curious who this friend was.

A moment later, the door to our private room opened. A young man stepped inside.

Close-cropped hair, thin gold-rimmed glasses, a couple years older than us.

I recognized him instantly.

Cassian Blackwood, the famous venture capitalist. He’d been Alistair and my biggest backer in my old life.

Rafael introduced us. “This is Cassian Blackwood. He’s my… childhood friend.”

He paused, settling on that phrase.

“He’s studying finance, sophomore year. I heard you’re interested in investing, so I thought you two should meet.”

I’d met Cassian once before, in my previous life, about a week after I ran into Rafael at that dinner.

Cassian had sought me out, offering funding for a project I was managing.

Back then I’d been swamped, battling a bad stomach ulcer and forced to go to endless networking dinners.

Cassian’s support had been a lifeline.

Later, he connected me to tons more projects.

Alistair had even said our company would’ve never gone public without Cassian’s help.

A bold thought popped into my head.

Was Cassian Blackwood part of the Moreau family?

Had Cassian appeared at exactly the right moment in my past life because Rafael had arranged it?

I couldn’t shake the thought, and I barely touched my food.

Halfway through the meal, I excused myself to the restroom.

The second I stepped out, a hand yanked me into the empty room next door.

I was about to shout when I saw it was Alistair.

“Why are you spending weekends with him?”

I was confused. “He’s my boyfriend.”

“Boyfriend?” Alistair scoffed. “What about what your mom said before she passed? You’re not even out of high school yet, Sera.”

My mom got tricked by my dad and left after I was born.

She’d made me promise not to date until I was eighteen, worried I’d get hurt.

“I turned eighteen last month. I can make my own choices.”

Alistair’s voice turned sharp and bitter. “Oh, really? Then what is it? The money? Are you seriously that shallow, Sera?”

His words froze me.

Is that really how he saw me?
