She Was Five Months Pregnant, I Was Three, He Was Hers Chapter 03

By the time I went downstairs, the lobby was packed with people.

Odessa stood in the middle of the crowd, her eyes swollen from crying and a stack of photos clenched in her hand. Beside her was a woman in her fifties, shouting so loudly her voice echoed through the entire lobby.

“Where’s Maren Winslow? Tell her to come out here!”

“A woman her age should know better than to chase after someone else’s husband!”

“My daughter is pregnant, and she still won’t leave my son-in-law alone. Someone like that should be fired!”

My coworkers whispered among themselves.

“Ms. Winslow? No way. She doesn’t seem like that kind of person.”

“You never really know someone.”

“That woman’s obviously pregnant. She can’t be making all of this up, can she?”

“And she brought pictures. There’s got to be something to it.”

I stepped out from the elevators.

The crowd parted automatically.

The moment Odessa saw me, tears spilled down her face. She threw the stack of photos at my feet, and they scattered across the floor.

There were pictures of Thayer and me having dinner together.

Pictures of us grocery shopping.

There was even one of us outside our home, with Thayer unloading bags from the trunk while I waited beside him.

They had all been taken from a distance. Someone had clearly been following us.

Odessa was crying so hard she could barely keep her voice steady.

“I knew something was wrong. He was always working late, going out of town, meeting clients… He kept giving me excuses.”

“I’m pregnant with his baby. I got scared, so I hired someone to find out what was going on.”

She pointed at the photos on the floor, her voice trembling.

“And this is what he found. I never thought there was someone else.”

The whispers around us grew louder.

“So the pictures are real.”

“Ms. Winslow actually went home with someone else’s husband?”

“Wasn’t she wearing a wedding ring too? Don’t tell me she lied about being married.”

“This is a mess.”

Odessa’s mother stormed up to me, her finger almost touching my face.

“Well? What do you have to say for yourself?”

“My daughter is five months pregnant, and you’re still going after her husband. Have you no shame?”

I looked at her.

“Are you sure Thayer Bellamy is your daughter’s husband?”

She gave a scornful laugh.

“Of course he is! Our families have already met, and my daughter is carrying his baby!”

She only got louder.

“I’ve seen women like you before. You found out he had money and a successful career, so you decided you wanted a piece of it.”

“You dress yourself up like some respectable professional, then do something this disgusting behind everyone’s back!”

Before I could answer, one of my coworkers finally spoke up.

“Ma’am, nobody knows what actually happened yet. You shouldn’t be insulting her before you know the whole story.”

Odessa’s mother whipped around.

“What more is there to know? The pictures are right here! My daughter saw her with Thayer herself!”

Then she turned back to me, her expression vicious.

“You’re going to apologize to my daughter in front of everyone today, and you’re going to promise you’ll never see Thayer again!”

I smiled.

“And if I don’t?”

Her expression changed.

She raised her hand and slapped me across the face. The crack echoed through the lobby, leaving my ear ringing.

Thayer was the one who cheated.

So why was I the one being called a homewrecker?

She lunged at me again.

This time, I raised my hand and slapped her back with all my strength. Her head snapped to the side.

A few seconds later, she flew at me in a rage.

“You hit me?”

She grabbed my collar, and I shoved her away without hesitation.

In the chaos, I couldn’t tell who bumped into whom. Odessa suddenly screamed as her mother stumbled backward into her, knocking her to the floor.

Odessa clutched her stomach, her face draining of color.

“My stomach hurts…”

The entire lobby erupted into chaos.

Her mother dropped to her knees beside her, holding her as she turned and glared at me.

“Maren Winslow! If anything happens to my grandbaby, I’ll make you pay!”

I stood where I was, watching them coldly.

Odessa looked up at me, tears streaming down her face.

“Even if you love Thayer, you can’t hurt my baby because of it…”

The looks around me changed again.

I didn’t explain.

I simply bent down, reached into my bag, and pulled out a certified copy of my marriage certificate.

I opened it for everyone to see.

There we were.

Thayer Bellamy and me. And beneath our names was the date our marriage had been registered. Three years ago.

I looked at Odessa as every trace of color disappeared from her face.

Then I spoke slowly.

“Look carefully.”

“Thayer Bellamy and I are the ones who are legally married.”
