His Secret Wife Was My Best Friend Chapter 06 The Place He Proposed
That night, Gareth left Cecily at the crash site far outside the city. Covered in blood, she sat alone by the road for a long time before finally hailing a cab to the hospital. The doctors found multiple fractures. She underwent surgery alone, telling neither Gareth nor her mother, who was busy with work. By the time the operation was over, most of the arrangements for her move abroad were in place. At her last postoperative appointment before leaving, Cecily saw Gareth for the first time in days. He was accompanying Daphne to a prenatal checkup, his face soft with affection. “Gareth, can I have ice cream after my appointment?” Daphne clung to his arm, coaxing him in a sugary voice. Smiling, he kissed her forehead. “Half. I’ll finish the rest.” She beamed and kissed his cheek. “Okay. Whatever you say.” They turned and saw Cecily holding her medical report. Gareth’s smile vanished. He stepped protectively in front of Daphne. “You just won’t leave us alone, will you? You’ve even followed us to the hospital. I told you to stay away from Daphne. Did you hear a word I said? “She and the baby were lucky to survive that crash. Are you determined to hound them to death?” Only after he’d finished did Daphne tug his sleeve. “It’s all my fault. Please don’t fight with Cecily over me.” She approached Cecily, her face full of apparent remorse. “I know it’s hard to accept that Gareth loves me, but our feelings are real. You’ve always been so kind. You’ll let us be happy, won’t you? “I’m sorry about the exhibition, too. The morning sickness was so bad I must have stumbled into the diamond. I didn’t even know what was happening. By the time I understood, you’d left. I only followed you so I could explain.” Cecily watched without expression as Daphne tried to guilt her into submission while pretending she hadn’t known what she was doing. When no response came, Daphne began to look embarrassed. She gritted her teeth, put on a meek, guilty expression, and seized Cecily’s hand, swinging it toward her own face. “I owe you this. Take it out on me. Please don’t make Gareth suffer.” Before Cecily’s hand could touch her, Gareth shoved Cecily away. She struck the wall behind her hard. Pain flared through wounds that still hadn’t healed. Holding Daphne, Gareth said tenderly, “I’m the one who got you pregnant. How could this be all your fault?” Then he cast a pointed glance at Cecily. “Come after me if you dare. Let’s see which family has more power, the Suttons or the Hollises.” They were on the hospital’s private ward, surrounded by familiar faces from their social circle. Gareth openly protected Daphne while trampling his fiancée’s dignity in front of everyone. Cecily pressed her lips together as pain tightened around her heart. “I’m not here because of Daphne. I’m here for…” He cut her off impatiently. “What else could it be?” Then he paused, finally remembering that their wedding was nearly here. His tone eased a little. “The wedding tomorrow? Don’t worry. I’ll be there on time. “I’ve even picked your bridesmaid. Daphne happens to be free.” He had decided everything without once asking what Cecily wanted. She sighed, a mocking smile touching her mouth. “Do whatever you like.” She wouldn’t be the bride tomorrow anyway. When she turned to leave without another word, an unfamiliar unease stirred in Gareth. His mocking look became uncertain. Something about her felt utterly foreign. This wasn’t the gentle, compliant Cecily he knew. “I’m talking to you, Cecily. Didn’t you hear me?” Leaving Daphne behind, he grabbed Cecily’s wrist and dragged her out of the hospital to his car. He didn’t stop driving until they reached the overlook on Westmere Ridge outside the city. With the mountain wind whipping around them, Gareth finally broke the silence. “Do you remember this place?” Cecily nodded. “Of course.” This was where he had gone down on one knee and proposed, bathed in the last light of the day. Now he leaned against the hood, watching her intently. “Last time we were here, I told you how I felt. I brought you back because I want to be just as honest now. “Daphne matters to me. I’m not leaving her, at least not yet. But I’ll never acknowledge her publicly as Mrs. Hollis. You’re the only woman I’ve ever wanted in that position.”
