Over the next several days, Ethan tried everything he could think of to find me.

He searched every social account I had ever used.

X, Instagram, and TikTok had all been wiped clean, and the accounts themselves were gone.

In less than twenty-four Hours, a living, breathing person had erased herself completely from his world.

If the red comments had appeared before him, it probably would have shown only one word.

His phone lit up.

Vanessa had sent him a message.

[Ethan, are we still taking the flight the day after tomorrow? I’ve already packed.]

He stared at the words for a long time.

Whenever Vanessa contacted him in the past, his first reaction had always been concern.

He felt guilty and believed it was his responsibility to take care of her.

he could only picture me asleep outside his office with that thermos in my arms.

Ethan lowered his head and typed three words.

[We’re not going.]

Vanessa called immediately, sobbing openly.

“Maybe we should stay away from each other for a while.”

The line went silent for two seconds.

He ended the call.

Using another number, he sent me a text.

I never responded.

An hour later, he sent another.

[You told me not to look for you, but I can’t stop.]

For the next several days, Ethan barely slept.

He searched professional networking groups, job boards, and updates from every mutual friend. He even contacted clients I had worked with in the past.

On the morning of the seventh day, one of his friends forwarded him a Northstar Technologies post on

LinkedIn.

Ethan’s finger stopped on the screen.

In the third onboarding group photo, Claire Bennett stood at the far left of the second row.

I wore an ivory blazer with my hair tied in a low ponytail. A brand-new employee badge hung around my

neck.

The photo was blurry, but when he enlarged it, he could still read the lines printed on the badge.

Claire Bennett.

Product Division.

Northbridge headquarters.

Ethan stared at the photo as his breathing slowly grew uneven.

I had gone to Northbridge.

On the seventh day, Ethan came to Northstar Technologies.

He didn’t have an appointment, so security refused to let him past the lobby. He sat in the visitor area for

three hours.

At eleven thirty, I came downstairs in my ivory blazer, talking to a colleague beside me.

My hair was tied in a low ponytail, and I wore only light makeup. I was a little thinner than he remembered.

“Claire.”

I stopped.

“I came to find you.”
