He Said I Was Overreacting, I Said I Was Over Him Chapter 02

Zoe stepped in front of me, blocking my path, and shot Lucas a disapproving glance. “Anna, what on earth are you fighting with him over? He even texted me earlier to ask what he should wear for your date today. Does that sound like someone who’s messing around?”

Lucas clicked his tongue and flicked her forehead. “Why’d you delete me for no reason? Now Anna thinks I upset you and she’s breaking up with me over it.”

Zoe burst out laughing and hooked her arm through mine. “See? Anna still loves me. You got your jealousy out of your system for today—wanna go grab something sweet instead?”

She poked Lucas hard in the chest, feigning a spoiled, bossy tone. “You’re paying. Got it?”

I felt disgust and pulled my arm free from her grip. “You two go ahead. I’m heading home. Lucas, you know exactly what you did, quit playing the perfect boyfriend in front of me.”

Lucas’s jaw tightened. He was clearly holding back his temper.

Zoe tugged at his sleeve, and he exhaled, forcing another smile. “Anna, I’m sorry. What do you want to eat? Beef? Sushi? Or the bag you liked?”

Zoe cut in, “Lucas sent me a picture of that bag earlier. I told him to hold off because it might go on sale in a few days. Don’t get mad over such a tiny thing. If you really like it, let’s go buy it now, okay?”

She reached for my arm again.

I sidestepped her, walked quickly to my car, and yanked the door open.

Under their confused stares, I started the engine and drove off.

When I got home, I called my VP and told him I’d decided to accept the relocation to France.

He sounded surprised. “Weren’t you planning to get married? The assignment is at least three years. Will your boyfriend be okay with that?”

I replied in a flat, emotionless voice, “We broke up.”

He paused for a moment, then said, “Well, if you’re sure, that’s great. The company has always held your skills in high regard.”

“Just make sure your personal affairs are in order. Once the relocation notice comes through, there’s no turning back.”

I hung up the phone. Exhausted as I was, I still dragged myself over to the closet.

I ripped Lucas’s clothes off the hangers one by one and tossed them into a suitcase.

Suddenly, a pill organizer fell out of one jacket pocket and clattered onto the floor.

The lid popped open, and white pills scattered across the floor.

I crouched down and picked one up. The tablet was hard, pressing painfully into my fingertip.

Eight years of dating, three years of living together.

And in the end, it all turned into nothing.

An hour. Two suitcases.

I left the bags by the entryway, took a hot shower, and went straight to bed.

I didn’t cry. I didn’t lie awake.

I slept more peacefully than I had on any night in the past three years.
