“Sabine used to be my best friend.”

I looked down.

“She isn’t anymore.”

“You’re right about that.”

“She’s the fake friend here.”

“She knew you were with Calder, and she still let everyone think she was his girlfriend.”

He was clearly getting drunk.

The more he drank, the more he talked.

Eventually, his words started slurring together.

Most of it became impossible to understand.

But one thing came through perfectly.

“Verity, you and me?”

“You and me? We’re decent people. We do what’s right.”

“So from now on, you’re my friend.”

“If anybody gives you trouble, call me. I’ve got your back.”

He was obviously done for the night.

I asked where he lived so I could get him home.

His answer came out too quietly.

I leaned closer.

“What did you say?”

Lysander turned his head.

His warm breath brushed my ear.

“I said you’re beautiful.”

The words were soft.

Almost featherlight.

I didn’t take a drunk man seriously.

“Thanks,” I replied politely. “You’re pretty handsome yourself.”

He was too drunk to explain where he lived, and I had no intention of calling Calder.

So I got him a separate room at my hotel.

A staff member helped me get him inside.

When I stepped back into the hallway, I found Calder standing there.

Both sides of his face were red from being slapped.

He looked at the room number behind me.

“You didn’t stay in the room I booked?”

“I don’t accept favors from people I’m done with.”

His expression twisted.

“Verity, are you really going to talk to me like this?”

“You were never like this before.”

He was right.

I used to throw my arms around him.

I used to tease him just to make him smile.

But that was when I loved him.

“How else should I talk to you?”

My voice was calm.

“I made myself clear today.”

“We’re done.”

“I don’t agree.”

His voice sharpened.

“Verity, Sabine and I never did anything.”

“She said she didn’t have many friends and wanted to come along when we went out. That’s all.

“I never thought of her as-”

“Calder.”

I cut him off.

“You used to tell me that even close friends needed boundaries.”

“And Sabine always said the two of you became such good friends because of me.”

I looked straight at him.

“So I trusted both of you.”

Every time they went hiking or bungee jumping, I had packed food, drinks, and equipment for

them.

I had been that stupid.

I had believed that even if the whole world betrayed me, those two never would.

Instead, they had both proved me wrong.

“You let your friends think she was your girlfriend.”

“You let your family think the same thing.”

I looked at him.

“It wasn’t because explaining was too much trouble.”

“You didn’t correct them because you didn’t want to.”

“Somewhere along the way, you started seeing Sabine as your girlfriend.”

“No!”

Calder looked almost offended.

“Sabine is a good person. I didn’t want people thinking badly of her.”

“Look what happened today. Lysander said a few things, and suddenly everyone thinks Sabine and I were doing something behind your back.”

“You’re a woman too. You know how easily a woman’s reputation can be ruined.”

I stared at him.

“And mine?”

He stopped.

“When your sister called me shameless and accused me of stealing you from Sabine, did me once?”

He said nothing.

Because he hadn’t.

He had stood there and watched.

He had let them drag my name through the dirt while he protected hers.
