Luca’s expression visibly stiffened.

He quickly forced a smile and tried to explain it away to the detective.

“She’s my girlfriend, Isabella’s my sister, and we all know each other. There’s no need to turn this into a criminal matter.”

Then he turned to me.

“Isa, do me a favour. Tell them to leave it. I’ll make Vanessa apologise to you later.”

I looked at him.

Every time Luca had caused trouble over the years, I had been the one who cleaned up the mess.

When he got into trouble at clubs, I was the one who went in and settled it.

When one of his investments failed, I covered the losses.

When he offended Family associates, I stepped in and dealt with the fallout.

After so many years, he had somehow started to believe that all he had to do was ask me to back down, and I would keep taking responsibility for whatever he did.

But tonight was different.

Whatever affection I had left for my brother had died in that dark storage room.

I turned to the detective.

“This wasn’t a misunderstanding. The hospital has records of my injuries, the restaurant has security footage, and that card shows a one-million-dollar payment. I want this dealt with by the book.”

Luca snapped his head towards me.

“Isa!”

The detective stepped forward.

Vanessa started screaming.

“Don’t touch me! Do you know who Luca is? He’s a Moretti!”

As Vanessa was taken away, she kept crying out Luca’s name.

Luca stood frozen in place.

None of his friends said a word.

Only minutes ago, they had been drinking.

Now they were beginning to realise what was really going on.

Luca didn’t actually dare tell me what to do.

When Vanessa’s voice finally faded away, Luca spun around.

For the first time, he shouted my full name in front of everyone.

“Isabella! Happy now? Is ruining my life what you wanted? Vanessa’s my girlfriend! Did you really have to do this in front of everyone?”

I looked at him.

“She hurt me. She locked me up. She humiliated me. And even now, all you care about is what everyone else thinks of you?”

Luca’s eyes reddened.

“Because you’ve never treated me like a real man! You have to control everything. You never let me decide anything for myself!”

“Everyone says the Moretti Family will be mine to run sooner or later, but you still won’t hand over control!”

The living room fell completely silent.

So this was what he had really believed all along.
