Raising The SSS-Risk Beast That Only Pretends To Be Tame Chapter 06

Raising The SSS-Risk Beast That Only Pretends To Be Tame Chapter 06

Morgan and I went to the isolation chamber.

I stayed inside alone for a week.

Nothing happened.

Seventeen didn’t come.

The live chat was more anxious than I was.

[Strange. I can’t find the monster anywhere.]

[Where did he go? Not a single trace.]

[No idea. Satellites can’t pick him up. Thermal imaging can’t catch him. Like he just vanished into

thin air.]

[Or-he learned how to hide.]

[An SSS-class monster that knows how to hide. That’s worse than him going berserk.]

[A berserk monster you can shock with an electric restraint. A hidden monster-he’s right next to

you, and you don’t even know it.]

I let myself hope. Maybe-just maybe-

Maybe he’d forgotten me.

After two weeks, I finally worked up the nerve to step out of the isolation chamber.

I went back to work at the lab.

I was walking down the hallway when I heard my coworkers talking.

“Did you see the new guy?”

“Yes! Oh my God, he’s so hot.”

“He’s like… bewitching. What’s the word-yeah, ethereal. He looks ethereal.”

“I walked past him earlier. He looked at me. Just once. One look, and I swear my soul was floating.

for half an hour before it came back.”

“What’s his name again? Silas? Weird name.”

“Silas. It sounds so good. Pretty name for a pretty face.”

I kept walking as I listened, wondering what kind of person could make a bunch of female researchers-women who stared at data all day-collectively lose their minds.

I turned the corner. Looked up.

I froze.

Silas.

Subject-17.

There he was. Standing by the wall at the end of the hallway. Leaning against the window.

He was tall-easily over six feet. Lean. Wiry. Like a blade fresh off the sharpening stone. Sharp.

Lethal. New.

He wore a long black trench coat that reached his calves, the collar popped up, hiding the lower half

of his snow-white chin.

His hair was long. Black. Straight. It fell all the way to the backs of his knees.

His face was exquisitely sick-high cheekbones, a straight nose, thin lips painted in a vivid red. His eyes were dark as pitch. Cold. And devastatingly beautiful.

He looked at me.

One second. Two seconds.

Then he turned his head and looked out the window.

Like I was a stranger. Like I was no one.

My heart seized in my chest.

The prey had recognized the predator.

But the predator-he looked right through his prey.

[!!! That new coworker is the monster…]

[HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT!!! HE’S RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!!! GIRL, RUN FOR YOUR

LIFE!!!]

[Wait-he didn’t recognize her.]

[Right. His eyes are empty. He doesn’t remember.]

[Well, he shed his brain. It makes sense he wouldn’t recognize her. Right now he’s just wandering.

Searching aimlessly.]

[Girl, for the love of God, do NOT bleed.]

[Act natural. Stay calm. Don’t draw his attention. Don’t trigger his instincts. Don’t let him smell

you.]

[Blend into the background. Become the wall. Become a pillar in the hallway.]

Yes.

Act natural. Just act natural.

I stiffened my neck and kept walking.

One step. Two steps. Three. Don’t look back. Don’t. Look. Back.

When I was right next to him, he suddenly turned.

“You-“His voice was low and melodic.

I froze. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t breathe.

He continued, “You smell like strawberry milk. It’s nice.”

I forced an awkward smile. “Just had some.”

He tilted his head, almost flirtatiously. “I like it. A lot.”

A wave of muffled shrieks erupted from the hallway behind me.

My coworkers were hiding around the corner, whispering like crazy.

“Oh my God, his smile is so seductive!”

“He said he likes it! He said he likes strawberry milk!”

“I’m drinking eight cartons a day starting tomorrow!!!”

“You could drink eighty. He wasn’t talking to you. He was talking to Chloe-”

“SHUT UP!!!”

I stood there in his gaze, frozen to the bone.

He didn’t remember me.

But he remembered strawberry milk.

I didn’t know what to feel. Relief-pure, dizzying relief that I was still alive. And something else—

something sad. Something that felt like loss.

From that day on, there was a new person in my life. His name was Silas.

Thankfully, we weren’t in the same department.

I told myself I could stay away from him. I told myself it would be easy.
