No time for questions. I grabbed the gun from his hand and put two rounds into the kidnappers flanking

Sloane.

Everett taught me to shoot. I didn’t miss

But the second I pulled the trigger, the drug slammed into me, and I dropped to one knee.

Nolan took the gun back and stepped in front of me.

The tables turned. The three nearest kidnappers gripped their weapons tighter, staring at him like they’d

seen a ghost.

“B–back off…”

Nolan’s stare alone could’ve killed them.

They forced through it anyway.

“I’m counting to three! Three, two, one! Get out of the way or I’ll put you down too!”

Nolan could fight. Between him and Sloane, it was over fast.

This time, Sloane walked away without a scratch.

Which meant I wouldn’t be fed to Winnie after all.

I let out a breath, and then watched Nolan step in front of Sloane before she could leave.

“Winona can come with me. I’ll patch her up.”

Sloane went still. Then she let go of me and laughed, cold and sharp.

“Perfect. Better yet, do whatever you want with her…”

Her last words blurred into static. Nolan loaded a med kit into the car and started dressing my wounds.

“I was in the area,” he said. “Didn’t expect the person I pulled out of there would be you.”

I tried to thank him, but the room kept tilting.

Whatever they’d injected into me was spreading. My whole body felt like it was melting.

Nolan’s fingers kept brushing the back of my neck, slow and deliberate…

“Winona, are you still with me?”

I nodded. Then shook my head.

The drug wasn’t a sedative, It was meant to make me compliant in an entirely different way.

At least the driver was a woman. And Nolan was someone I trusted.

I let my guard down completely and leaned into his hand on my shoulder.

Two minutes later.

Something warm grazed my neck.

Nolan had leaned in, close, tob close, his breath hot against the back of my neck.
