I didn’t push Everett again after that.

I played nice. Made peace. And behind his back, I started selling everything I owned.

Three years of gifts, three years of shopping with zero guilt. It added up.

The number in my account almost didn’t look real.

Everett insisted I keep the bag and the watch. I told myself I’d sell them later, but I couldn’t bring myself to

do it.

So I wore the watch.

When Everett noticed, his whole face changed. He pulled me into his arms and kissed me like I’d just given

him the world.

That night, I handed him a glass of scotch with a sedative dissolved in it.

He never questioned anything I gave him. Downed the liquor in one go, ran his fingers through my hair, and

smiled.

“Baby, you’ve been so sweet lately.”

Three minutes later, he was out.

I waited until his breathing went deep and even. Then I slipped out through a blind spot in the security

perimeter.

Nolan was waiting in an abandoned building nearby.

I skipped the small talk. I held out a bank card with $700,000 on it and asked him to get me out of the

country.

We agreed on the night of the welcome–home gala; the crowd would be big enough to disappear into.

Being Everett’s woman meant being watched around the clock.

The gala would be my only shot.

Nolan’s face went serious the moment I said the number.

My heart stuttered. “It’s not enough? I can get more…”

“It’s not about the money, Winona.”

He read the panic on my face and laughed softly. “We’re friends. You really think I’d charge you for this?”

‘Don’t worry. I’ll get you out. You don’t owe me a thing…”

He wouldn’t take the card no matter how hard I pushed. In the end, all I could do was thank him.

I was halfway to the door when I stopped and turned around.

I didn’t know why I felt the need to say it.

“Everett isn’t a monster. He’s been good to me, really good… Whatever happens that night, please don’t

hurt him.”
