Not Their Daughter, Just the Mistress Chapter 07

Everett didn’t come home that night.

I spent the night crying and throwing up; the cornments wouldn’t stop, and neither would the nausea.

I was about to drag myself to the hospital when my phone buzzed.

[Winona, when can I see you again?]

Nolan.

My phone was monitored. I knew that much. I typed back using the code we’d set up when we were in college, deleted the thread, and buried myself under the covers.

Everett came home as the sun was coming up. I still hadn’t slept.

My eyes were swollen and raw from crying.

He took one look at me and froze. Then he forced a smile that didn’t reach his eyes and held out a box.

“Babe, look what I got you.”

The limited–edition bag I’d been obsessing over for months.

My adoptive parents never gave me money for things like that. So the second Everett started spoiling me, I collected bags like a vendetta.

I’d filled nearly every cabinet in his house. Hundreds of them.

I didn’t think he’d still be buying me things. Not after last night.

[Is she seriously gonna fall for this again?]

[Lmao, Everett is just feeling guilty after sleeping with the FMC. This bag is guilt money, that’s it.]

He was wearing a different suit than last night. Pristine. Not a wrinkle, not a crease.

And he smelled faintly of hotel soap. He’d showered before coming home.

My stomach turned.

I pushed the bag away without a word. A little while later, Everett walked back in with the white lion.

“Babe, you used to love her…”

Winnie bounded toward me, tail swaying like nothing had changed. I panicked, yanked the knife from under

my pillow, and held it out in front of me, hand shaking.

‘Don’t–don’t come any closer! Either of you!”

Winnie’s golden eyes blinked, confused, and she let out a soft, hurt whine.

Everett went still.

He handed Winnie off to her handler, then gently, carefully, pried the knife from my fingers.

For the first time, he looked like he had no idea what to do with me.

He brought my hand to his lips.

“Babe, if I did something wrong, just tell me… Please stop trying to leave. Okay?”

I bit my lip and swallowed the tears.

Men were all the same. Do something terrible, then show up with a gift and expect it to magically fix

everything.
