She flinched at the sharpness in his eyes, stammering again.

“Lady Sofia said you and the Donna already got divorced…”

He cut her off before she could finish.

“When did I get a divorce?”

Impossible. He hadn’t known a thing about it. He hadn’t signed anything!

He stormed straight into his mother’s room.

“Mother. When exactly did Elena and I divorce?”

Donna Sofia startled at his sudden entrance, frowning.

“The papers went through two days ago.”

She pulled a folder from the drawer and handed it to him.

Black and white. It burned to look at.

Damiano’s voice went hard.

“This is my marriage! What gave you the right to decide it for me? Did anyone ask what I wanted?”

He ripped the papers to shreds.

“I never agreed to this. It’s not final!”

He turned to walk out..

“Elena took eighty lashes of the Judas Lash to earn that divorce. You know what that rule means.

He stopped cold.

…The Judas Lash.”

He murmured it to himself, his whole body swaying like the floor had tilted under him.

That was the family’s most brutal punishment-no one in living memory had ever dared to ask for it.

And she’d chosen to endure it, just to get away from him.

Why?

His face drained of every ounce of color.

He stumbled out of the room. Donna Sofia watched his broken silhouette disappear, shaking her head.

“What a curse this love turned out to be!”

Damiano wandered the courtyard in a daze.

From somewhere in the shadows, voices drifted over.

“Bianca, I heard the Don finally divorced Elena. Guess you’re next in line to be the Donna. Take care of us when you get there, hm?”

Bianca’s voice, dripping with satisfaction.

“Don’t worry, when I’m the Donna, everyone here gets taken care of.”

“You all helped me run that bitch out, after all-planting that pendant on the old man was a nice touch. Left

her with nowhere to turn.”

Damiano went rigid, frozen in place.
