My Husband Faked My Funeral. I Came Back For Everything. Chapter 11 – Four Hundred and Twenty-Six Days

“Evie. Evie. Oh my God-

I hadn’t heard him say my name in fourteen months.

I sat down on the mess hall floor with my back against a table leg.

“Hi, Theo.”

He made a sound I never want to hear again as long as I live.

“Don’t hang up. Please don’t hang up, please=”

“I’m not hanging up,” I said. “I need you to answer one question. Does the name Ambrose Devereux mean anything to you?”

The crying stopped like a switch had been thrown.

“He came to see me in April,” Theo said. “At the facility. He asked me what your handwriting looked like.”

He was at the Sable House gate in five hours, in a taxi he’d paid for with money Mara wired him, and Mara was in the back seat beside him with her hair cut short and her hands shaking.

I made them wait eleven minutes.

That isn’t cruelty. Eleven minutes is nothing next to fourteen months, and I needed to stand at that window and get my face under control first.

Then I walked down in a Commander’s jacket with two of my team behind me, and I watched my brother see me for the first time since he was eighteen years old.

He’d grown two inches. He was so thin.

“Evie,” he said, and then he couldn’t do anything else.

I held my brother in a gravel driveway for a very long time.

Here’s what came out over the next two hours, in a room with the door shut.

March ninth: Callum filed for Theo’s guardianship, signed by the trustee, Walter Kade. Two days later my husband stopped speaking to me, because a man doesn’t have to lie to a woman he’s stopped addressing.

April: Theo was moved three hundred miles away. They told him I’d approved it. They told him I’d said I needed space. They told him, for fourteen months, that his sister had signed the forms herself – and they had my signature to show him, because Walter had forty years of my grandmother’s files and I have been signing my name in the same looping E since I was seven.

May: Theo started writing instead of calling. Eleven letters. None of them arrived.

July: Mara drove to the house to see me and was met at the gate by Vivienne Ashford, who told her, pleasantly, that Mara’s mother’s nursing home was an Ashford property and it would be a shame if the funding review went badly.

Mara blocked my number that night. She’s been sick about it for a year.

“I thought you’d stopped loving me,” I said to both of them. “That’s what I believed. For four hundred and twenty-six days I believed I was easy to stop loving.”

Mara put her face in her hands.

“They didn’t just take your money,” Theo said. “They took everybody who’d notice your were gone. That’s how it works, Evie. First they make you alone, and then nobody asks questions when you disappear, because who’s left to ask?”

I thought about a woman named Céline Renard buried in a field. I thought about forty-one names on Nadia’s printout.

Then I stood up, because t could feel the thing that has been holding me upright for eight months turning into something with an edge on it.

“Then we take it back 1 said. “All of it. Every file, every family, every one of those forty-one women. And we start with the man who’s been walking around Sable House with a master key.”

Theo looked up. “What man?”

“Contractor credential,” I said. “Archive access, night hours, cleared eleven months ago. Priya’s pulling the name now.”

And my brother’s face did something I will never forget as long as I live. It emptied.

“Evie,” he said. “Don’t.”

“Theo–”

“It’s no, listen to me-” He grabbed my wrist, and he said the next part fast, like a man pulling a bandage, like he’d been holding it for a year. “Not him. Please, not him. Anyone but him. Because if it’s Uncle Walter, then he sold you when you were nine years old, and finding that out is going to kill you twice.”
