Too Late, Alpha. My Silence Was Goodbye Chapter 06

When Lucian rushed into the Lunar Registry, the clerk was just getting ready to close up.

“Cancel the severance,” he demanded, slamming his terminal onto the counter. “Whatever she submitted, I don’t agree to it.”

The clerk pulled up the file, their expression growing cautious.

“Alpha, you already agreed to it. The bond dissolution petition was signed by both parties a month ago, and the mandatory waiting period has already ended. Three days ago, Ms. Vale initiated the final countdown with her blood, and she completed the final confirmation this

morning.”

“I never signed anything,” he growled.

As the words left his mouth, Lucian suddenly remembered a night from a month ago. Selena had claimed the thunderstorm was making her wolf lose control and begged him to stay. Mara had brought over a stack of territory documents for his signature. Annoyed by her interruption, he had signed all of them without even looking at the contents. He had spent that night in Selena’s room again..

The next morning, Mara had stood outside the door and watched Selena walk out wearing nothing but his dress shirt. She hadn’t made a scene, nor had she asked what happened

between them.

It turned out she had been leaving him since that very day. Theo’s death hadn’t started her leaving. It had only cut away the last bit of hesitation holding her back.

“Where did she go?” Lucian asked.

“The severance is complete, so her whereabouts are no longer your concern,” the clerk replied.

Lucian almost lost control, his sharp claws starting to extend, but Freya stormed into the registry right at that moment and hurled a terminal hard against his chest.

“Listen to what the person you’ve protected your entire life had to say first,” she spat.

Selena’s voice echoed from the terminal.

“Lucian knows I’ve been able to swim across Crescent Lake since I was 12… but he still

swam toward me first.”

Everyone in the registry froze in their tracks. The color slowly drained from Lucian’s face.

Of course he knew it was true. When the waves crashed over them, Selena was closer to him. She reached out to him in the water, her eyes just as helpless as they had been every time she caused trouble when they were kids. He heard Theo’s cries for help, and he knew perfectly well that Selena could swim back on her own. However, 18 years of ingrained instinct made him grab her first.

He thought it would only take a few seconds, and he thought he would still have time. By the time he turned back around, nothing was left on the surface of the water except Theo’s blue life jacket.

“You didn’t just choose her,” Freya said, her eyes welling with tears. “You also made everyone believe that Mara killed her own child. She was beaten by the entire pack right in front of Theo’s casket, and you just stood there and watched.”

“I stopped them eventually,” he argued. The moment the words left his mouth, even Lucian realized how ridiculous they sounded.

“You waited until her face was covered in blood before you stopped them,” Freya sneered. “And then you let her continue taking the blame because Selena supposedly has nothing. Then what does Mara have? She lost her child, lost her reputation, and was almost drowned alive by your mother. She doesn’t even have her own mate.”

Lucian couldn’t find the words to speak.

The recording on the terminal had already spread all across the pack network. Members of the Blackthorn pack were gathering outside the estate, demanding a public explanation from their Alpha. The Elder Council had convened an emergency trial, and every guard who had witnessed the coastal accident firsthand was being forcibly subpoenaed.

But Lucian couldn’t bring himself to care about any of that.

“Lock down all the borders,” he ordered his Beta. “Track the vehicle she took, and investigate every single road leading out of the Blackthorn territory. I want to know where Mara is before nightfall.”

“Alpha, the people from the Northstar Sanctuary took her away,” the Beta replied, lowering his head. “Their vehicle disappeared after entering the Northern Reach. The Lunar Council has a warding barrier set up there, so we can’t get in without the sanctuary’s permission.”

Lucian’s inner wolf let out an agonized howl inside him.

For the first time in 7 years, he had finally gotten the peace and quiet he had always craved. There were no more questions from Mara, no more of her voice brushing against his mind, and no one waiting for him to come home anymore.

Yet the silence felt like a tomb closing around him.
