Mara’s nails dug into her palms, but her voice remained steady.

“Go on,” she said.

Selena was quite satisfied with how pale she looked.

“Before he jumped into the water, Lucian yelled at me to shift into my wolf form and swim

back to shore. You know I’ve been able to swim across Crescent Lake since I was 12, so

those waves couldn’t trap me at all. But I called out his name,” Selena said. She tilted her head, as if savoring an answer that had been proven countless times. “And he still swam toward me first. Theo was just to his back right, choking on water and crying out for his dad. Lucian looked back and saw him, knowing full well he could only save one person first. Then, he grabbed me.”

The world spun before Mara’s eyes. She could almost see 5-year-old Theo reaching out in the waves. The child had always worshipped his father, believing Alpha Lucian could do anything and that as long as his dad was there, he would definitely be safe.

“Lucian put me on the rocks and swam back, but Theo had already been swept away by the rip current,” Selena continued, lowering her voice so that every word dripped with malicious sweetness. “Theo didn’t die from an accident. He died in those few seconds when Lucian made his choice. The worst part is that he was terrified the Elder Council would execute me, so he ordered all the guards present to keep their mouths shut and personally told the entire pack that you forced Theo to participate in the Coastal Trial. Mara, you and your son combined still aren’t as important as I am.”

A single tear finally slipped from Mara’s eye. It was the last time she would ever cry for Lucian. She wiped away the tear and turned off the recording.

“Thank you,” she murmured.

Selena’s smile froze. “What did you say?”

“Thank you for making me let go of all hope completely,” Mara replied.

She turned and walked away. First, she sent the recording to Freya, and then she uploaded it to the Werewolf Council’s pack network. After that, she walked into the Lunar Registry and pressed her blood seal onto the final page of the bond severance deed.

When the crescent mark peeled away from the skin of her neck, a sharp pain pierced her heart. The mate link that had bound them for 7 years snapped inch by inch, and a furious, panicked roar from Lucian echoed from the other end.

“Mara!”

It was the first time he had frantically called out to her through the link, and it would also be his last. After the link completely disappeared, Mara got into the transport from the Northstar Sanctuary. As the vehicle crossed the border of the Blackthorn territory, she didn’t look back.

At the exact same time, Lucian was in the estate kitchen trying to learn how to brew the laurel bone broth. He followed the recipe Mara left behind three times, but he just couldn’t recreate the taste from his memory. The head steward reminded him that Mara always adjusted the herbs based on his condition, meaning there was never a truly fixed

measurement.

Looking at the recipe with a few sparse lines, Lucian suddenly remembered how she had once smiled and told him that she would give it to him when they were no longer mates.

A sudden, intense pain pierced the side of his neck without warning, causing the soup ladle to clatter to the floor. Lucian fell to his knees among the shattered porcelain, desperately reaching out to the mate link, only to be met with dead silence.

He finally understood what that recipe meant.

“Mara!”

The Alpha’s roar shattered an entire row of windows.

When he rushed into the hospital, Mara’s bed was already empty. The blankets were neatly folded, and there was no note left on the nightstand. Even the moonstone necklace he had given her was resting on the pillow.

A nurse told him that Ms. Vale had been discharged 3 hours ago.

“She is the Luna!” Lucian yelled, violently overturning the bedside table. “Who gave you permission to let her leave alone?”

“She isn’t anymore,” the nurse replied. Trembling with fear, she handed him the electronic notification.

The Lunar Registry confirmed at four in the morning that the mating bond between Mara Vale and Lucian Thorne had been officially severed.

Lucian stared at that line of text, forgetting to breathe for a long time.
