He Only Lets Me Call Saturdays at Nine I Call Someone Else Chapter 02

I went back to my apartment and collapsed onto the bed.

My phone screen stayed dark. Two hours passed, and Adrian still hadn’t replied.

Actually, I’d expected it.

For five years, he’d ignored every message I’d sent him.

But tonight was different. I’d told him I wanted to break up. I’d thought that might at least get some kind of reaction out of him.

But it didn’t.

Then my phone suddenly lit up. It was a message from Lilah.

[Roselyn, you made it home, right?]

[Did some guy dump you tonight? You looked awful…]

[Maybe you should just break up. A man like that isn’t worth it. Not every man is as good as Adrian…]

The light from the screen made my eyes sting. I didn’t reply.

The next morning, I pushed open the conference room door.

Adrian’s eyes swept over me without lingering.

When it was my turn to present, I was only four minutes in before Adrian spoke.

“Roselyn, did you come back from your business trip thinking you were above doing any real work?” His voice held not a trace of warmth.

“You can’t even get the basic punctuation right on a slide deck. With an attitude like this, maybe you shouldn’t be working here.”

The room went silent.

Adrian had never been gentle with me at work. He was a strict boss in the company. And I was always the employee who couldn’t seem to get anything right.

I tightened my grip on the presentation clicker. “I’m sorry. I’ll fix it.”

After the meeting, I stayed in the conference room to redo the slides.

Through the glass wall, I saw Adrian standing beside Lilah in the open office, walking her through a report.

He stood behind her, pointing at the numbers on her screen.

He looked patient. I’d never seen that side of him before.

By the time I finally made it to the end of the workday, I was prepared to leave.

Lilah came over and hooked her arm through mine.

“Roselyn! Don’t be mad. I told Adrian off at lunch. How could he treat you like that?”

“Come on. I’ll take you somewhere to watch the stars. It’s close by. Adrian takes me there every night.”

I instinctively looked at Adrian. He had one hand in his pocket and didn’t object.

When we arrived, I realized it was a grassy hill. The view was wide open, and the night sky really was filled with stars.

Halfway through our conversation, Lilah suddenly pulled out several bottles of alcohol and turned to Adrian with a playful pout.

“Adrian! I want you to tell me the truth. Do you love me? Say you love me!”

Adrian smiled helplessly and answered her again and again. I just sat beside them and listened to their playful banter.

Eventually, Lilah curled up in Adrian’s arms and fell asleep.

He finally looked at me, hesitation in his eyes. He pulled out some cash and his apartment key and held them toward me.

“Take a cab home. I need to take Lilah back. She’s a light sleeper, and I don’t want to leave her alone.”

“Go back to my place and wait for me. I’ll explain everything when I get back.”

I didn’t refuse because I remembered there were still some things of mine at his apartment. I needed to go back and get them all.
