After They Stole My Life, Reborn I Called Another Man Dad Chapter 05

My adoptive father, Ethan, clearly hadn’t expected Arthur to say that.

He hesitated.

“Okay… She should know her biological family.”

The moment those words left his mouth, I froze.

Not because I was happy.

Because I was terrified.

I looked up at Ethan.

He was already looking at me.

And suddenly, I felt ridiculous.

Eighteen years had passed, yet I was still afraid.

Afraid that his next words would be:

Now that your biological parents are here, you should go home with them.

The panic hit me so hard that I didn’t even put down my backpack.

I turned and ran.

I didn’t hear Ethan calling after me.

I kept running until I reached the corner.

That’s where he caught up with me.

He grabbed my arm.

“Why are you running?”

I kept my head down.

My voice came out muffled and shaky.

“I need to make room for her.”

“What?”

I swallowed hard.

“Your biological daughter’s place.”

Ethan stared at me like I’d just said the most ridiculous thing he’d ever heard.

He was so angry he couldn’t speak for several seconds.

Then he reached over and lightly knocked his knuckles against my forehead.

“Who told you that place was yours to give away?”

My nose burned instantly.

Tears welled in my eyes.

Ethan sighed and crouched down in front of me, just like he used to when I was little.

“Zoe, I only found out today that Chloe is my biological daughter. I owe her something. That’s true.”

I gripped the straps of my backpack tighter.

Then he continued.

“But owing her something has nothing to do with whether I want you.”

I stared at him.

His eyes were red too.

His voice cracked.

“When you were seven months old and had a high fever, I was the one who carried you into the ER.”

“When you were three, you fell and chipped half a tooth. I took time off work, picked you up from preschool, and stayed with you through the surgery.”

He gave a shaky laugh.

“And when you got your first period and thought you were dying, you called me crying. I went to the grocery store and had to ask three different women in the health aisle before I finally figured out which pads to buy you.”

He shook his head, almost laughing at himself.

“I raised you for eighteen years.”

“And now you’re standing here telling me that none of it counts because we don’t share the same blood?”

My tears spilled over.

Ethan sighed helplessly and reached up to wipe them away.

“I can have another daughter.”

He looked straight into my eyes.

“But I am never going to throw one daughter away just because I found out I have another.”
