My Adopted Sister Rejected the Comatose Duke, So I Married Him and Became His Duchess Chapter 09

My Adopted Sister Rejected the Comatose Duke, So I Married Him and Became His Duchess Chapter 09

Vivian trembled slightly.

This time, I refused to retreat.

I had done every one of those things with my own hands.

Even if everyone else refused to acknowledge the truth, the physicians, servants, and minstrels in the castle

could all testify on my behalf.

After hesitating for only a moment, I stepped forward before everyone for the first time.

“It was me. I was the one who stayed beside you for the past six months. I washed and groomed you, read official documents and stories to you, and arranged harp music for you. My name is Evelyn.”

Although events had strayed from the Duchess’s original plan, she released a long breath of relief when she

saw me finally speak up for myself.

A faint smile also appeared on Alexander’s lips.

He seemed quite pleased with my answer.

The moment our eyes met, I suddenly realised something.

Perhaps he had remembered everything that happened while his spirit was separated from his body from the

instant he opened his eyes.

He had deliberately waited until now because he wanted to see whether I would claim the credit that had

always belonged to me.

I wondered whether he also remembered those two estates.

If he did, could he please hurry up and give me the deeds?

Vivian had clearly realised that something was wrong, but she still refused to give up.

“No, don’t listen to her lies! Alexander, you know Evelyn has bullied me since we were children. She has

always loved stealing what belongs to me. Now she is even trying to steal my fiancé!”

Had she not repeated that lie, Alexander might have allowed her to retain a shred of dignity.

But the moment he heard it, his gaze turned icy.

He had obviously remembered even more.

“Vivian, I do not wish to see you right now. Leave my castle immediately”

The Duchess raised her hand and summoned the guards waiting outside

Just as Vivian was about to be escorted away, Alexander spoke again.

“Wait.”

Vivian’s face lit up, believing that his lingering feelings for her had finally softened him.

But Alexander merely spoke quietly to his mother before looking at me with a smile

“Evelyn, in gratitude for the devoted care you have given me over the past six months, I have decided to grant

you two of my richest estates and an annual allowance for the rest of your life. The physicians,

representatives, and scribes present today can all serve as witnesses. I give you this property of my own free

will, so you may accept it without hesitation.”

The Duchess ordered the steward to bring two estate deeds bearing the family seal.

She also instructed a scribe to prepare the document granting me a lifetime annual allowance.

When my name was finally written on the parchment contracts, I felt dazed.

The sudden joy nearly overwhelmed me.

Vivian’s shrill scream dragged me back to reality.

“Why should she get them? Those two estates should belong to me! If I had not given her the chance to care for you, she never would have received any of this. Give me those deeds!”

She lost control and lunged towards me, but the guards stopped her several paces away.

Baron and Baroness Gray were also escorted from the castle.

Every scribe and family representative present witnessed their humiliation as they left.

There was no need to wait until the following day.

The scandal of Vivian falsely claiming credit for my work would spread throughout the noble families before

nightfall.

After everything she had put me through over the years, the thought brought me no small amount of

satisfaction.

I had already decided to bring Baron and Baroness Gray before the court for their years of mistreatment and formally sever all family ties with them.

Once the representatives and scribes finished their questions, the recovery chamber finally became quiet.

The Duchess thoughtfully dismissed everyone else, allowing Alexander and me to speak alone.

For the past six months, I had spoken to his spirit every day.

But now that I was truly facing him awake, I suddenly had no idea what to do with myself.

Alexander watched my awkwardness with interest, his eyes narrowing slightly.

“Evelyn, how exactly did you know that cheese is my favourite food?”
