He Chose Her, But I Inherited His Empire Chapter 08

On Blair’s birthday, the entire class showed up.

They pounded on my door and laughed.

A few of them sent me photos of the party’s head table. In the pictures, Blair’s name card was placed at my father’s right hand. My name was nowhere to be found.

I was locked in my room.

The guards outside wouldn’t let me leave.

It was an order from the head of the family.

My father didn’t even come inside. He just stood outside my door and tore into me.

“How could you destroy something Helena left behind?

“Do you hate her that much? Do you hate Blair that much?

“Do you have any idea how long Blair prepared for this public appearance?

“If Helena saw what you’ve become, she would regret ever giving birth to you.”

After he left, Blair unlocked the door with a key.

“How does it feel? Hearing him say, with his own mouth, that you’re just the relative of an employee?

“You got Mom killed. Dad has hated you for a long time.

“The only reason he didn’t throw you out is that if the capos ask about Ricci’s true bloodline tonight, it would be inconvenient for him to explain.”

I ignored her, my gaze fixed on the window.

The lawn was a sea of flowers and lights.

The Ricci family crest stood near the pool. Capos, allies, and protected businessmen were taking their seats.

After tonight, they would all treat Blair as the chosen daughter.

This should have been my sixteenth birthday, too.

I had watched her steal it from me for ten years.

Someone outside called for Blair to cut the cake.

When she saw I still wasn’t responding, her expression darkened.

“Genevieve, I’m talking to you.”

I didn’t look at her.

She snatched the necklace fragments from my palm.

“Why didn’t you just die with your mother?”

She threw the pieces out the window.

A silver glint flashed over the lawn before disappearing into the pool.

I climbed onto the windowsill and jumped.

Screams erupted from the party below.

Icy water flooded my nose and mouth.

I couldn’t swim, but I still reached for the fragments sinking toward the bottom.

Before I blacked out, I thought I heard my mother’s voice.

She was calling my name.

“Genevieve, Mommy’s here.”
