“Genevieve! Who said you could come out?”

My father’s face darkened instantly.

Blair stood, her expression a perfect mask of innocence.

“Genevieve, what’s wrong?”

“When did you steal this?”

Every night before bed, I opened my jewelry box.

Last night, it had still been there.

No one had protected me for years. That necklace was the only thing I had left to hold on to.

It reminded me that once, someone had loved me.

“Steal?” Blair feigned insult.

“That’s enough.” My father’s voice turned to ice. “The cameras are still rolling.”

“I don’t care.” I clenched the necklace in my fist. “Mom left this to me. Wasn’t it enough that she took my room, my name, and my place?

“And Mom isn’t dead. Blair, you have no right to treat this like some keepsake.”

The host looked at my father, hesitant.

“Mr. Ricci, who is this?”

Blair looked at him, too.

My father didn’t hesitate.

“A relative of one of the estate staff.”

Ice flooded my veins.

He had long ago told the world that Blair was his only daughter.

Blair had spent years telling everyone at school that I only had a place to live because of the Ricci family’s charity.

But this was the first time, in front of cameras and the Ricci capos, that he had personally denied my blood.

The public would hear a simple lie.

The capos would hear an order: the head of the family had withdrawn his recognition of me.

From this moment on, everyone under the Ricci family’s shadow would know that hurting me came without a price.

The panic vanished from Blair’s face.

While I stood there, stunned, she snatched the necklace back.

“You’re mistaken. My mother left this for me. If you like something else, I can buy it for you, but I can’t give you this.”

Everyone stared at me as if I were some lunatic who had crashed the interview.

I just wanted my necklace back.

“Give it back. That’s the last thing Mom left me.”

I grabbed Blair’s wrist.

Her fingers went slack, and the necklace fell to the marble floor.

The four-leaf clover pendant shattered.

I stood frozen, my mind blank.

The last piece of my mother was gone.

“Happy now?” my father said, glaring at me. “Get out.”

Blair immediately burst into tears.

“Genevieve, you’ve gone too far.”

I crouched, picking up the broken pieces.

The sharp edges sliced my fingers. Blood dripped onto the snapped chain.
