He Let Another Woman Play My Wife, So I Walked Away as His Real Wife Chapter 04

On the final day, Gavin told me to come back to the apartment. He said the seven days were over. My keys, the signet ring, and my resignation paperwork would all be returned to me in person, and it was time to properly sort out what was left between us.

Before I even pushed the door open, I could see through the gap that the living room had been decorated exactly the way it had been every year when they announced that the “game” was over.

Champagne, cake, streamers. Everything was there.

But the walls were covered with photos from the previous three years. There were pictures of me arguing with them, leaving parties in anger, and tearing up the game agreements.

Beneath each photo, they had written the wager. This year, they were betting on how many minutes it would take me to back down after seeing the divorce agreement.

Claire was sitting in my usual spot, twirling my car keys around one finger. The Whitmore family signet ring was still on her right hand. Gavin stood beside her.

Someone started teasing them.

“Gavin, Claire, Erin isn’t here yet. Why don’t you two just admit what this is?”

“Exactly. She always gives in in the end. How much longer are the pair of you going to pretend you’re only friends?”

“I saw you both coming out of a hotel on the sixteenth last month.”

“You had hickeys even your collars couldn’t hide, and you’re still calling it friendship?”

My hand stopped on the doorknob.

The sixteenth of last month.

That was the day my stomach hurt so badly I could barely stand upright. I called Gavin three times. He said he was in a meeting and couldn’t get away, told me to take something for the pain, and said that if it got worse, I should go to the hospital on my own.

So he hadn’t been busy.

He had checked into a hotel with Claire.

Inside the living room, Claire looked at Gavin. When he made no move to stop her, she stood up, wrapped her arms around his waist, and kissed him.

Gavin did not push her away immediately.

Only after Claire pulled back did he frown, as though he had only just realised there was another problem. His voice dropped.

“Erin’s taken this too far. After this, we should knock these games on the head.”

It was almost laughable.

So even crossing the line in our marriage could still be written off as a game.

I drew a breath, pushed the door open, and walked inside.

All the joking stopped. Everyone fell silent, but they had all seen the kiss clearly.

A divorce agreement lay neatly in the middle of the coffee table.

Gavin looked uneasy, but he still believed I would never actually divorce him. He believed that, just as I had for the past three years, I would cave in eventually.

Someone laughed and reminded me, “Erin, two years ago you got halfway through signing the fake agreement and tore it up. Don’t back out at the last second again.”

Claire looked at me, her tone flat.

“Don’t make such a big deal out of it. Gavin just wanted to be sure you still cared.”

Gavin leaned back against the sofa, utterly certain of himself.

“Admit you were jealous, apologise to Claire, put your wedding ring back on, and I’ll tear this up here and now.”

I opened the document.

The asset division, the property ownership details, and every detail about our marriage were genuine. The lawyer’s signature and firm details were there too.

Just to make sure I believed him, Gavin had actually had a legally valid divorce agreement drawn up.

And yet he still did not think I would dare sign it.

He even had one of his friends point a camera directly at my face, ready to record my fourth breakdown.

Before the countdown ran out, I picked up the pen. Gavin was already smiling.

He probably expected me to do exactly what I had done two years earlier: push the papers back at him and demand to know whether he was serious.

I neither argued nor hesitated. I simply signed my name at the bottom of the agreement.

The laughter stopped dead.
