“Elara, wake up. Elara.”

Someone was shaking me. It was annoying. I just wanted to sleep. Sleep meant no pain.

I didn’t want to wake up.

The voice wouldn’t stop.

I opened my eyes and found myself in the hospital.

Darien sat in the chair beside my bed, his eyes red and puffy.

“When did you know you’re sick?”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

He knew.

I turned my head away. “The day I caught Kael cheating.”

I stared blankly at the ceiling.

Darien held my hand. Then I came to my sense, “I’m sorry for causing you trouble.”

“Thank you for bringing me to the hospital.”

I tried to pull away, but I was too weak. I gave up and let him hold it.

He might have been a bastard, but he was beautiful.

Might as well enjoy it before I died.

Darien stared at me silently.

He was crying. I couldn’t believe it. I’d never seen Darien Blackwood cry.

“Elara… marry me.”

After a long moment, he lowered his eyes, his voice shaking, afraid I’d say no.

I flinched.

“Darien, don’t joke.”

“I’m serious, Elara. I’ve regretted it for years. I planned to tell you after you divorced Kael.”

“I was wrong. I’m so sorry. I love you, Elara.”

Darien spoke urgently, staring straight into my eyes.

I slowly pulled my hand free and curled up under the covers.

I tried not to cry, but a tear slipped down my cheek.

“Darien, if you’d said that five years ago, I would’ve been the happiest person alive.”

“I waited for you for so long. All I got was a breakup.”

Darien looked at me, his voice breaking. “I’m sorry.”

Why did everyone wait until I didn’t care anymore?
