I was in a good mood. I smiled the whole time.

Everyone else at the County Clerk’s Office looked miserable, shouting or crying.

They probably thought I was there to get married.

People stared in shock when Kael and I walked to the divorce window.

“You’re that happy to divorce me?” Kael snapped, his face furious.

I looked at him, confused. “Aren’t you happier?”

At the last second, Kael grabbed my hand. His expression was serious.”Elara…”

I pulled away and signed quickly.

Then he signed too.

I stared at the divorce decree, then tore up our marriage license and threw it in the trash.

Kael looked even angrier. “You can’t wait to be rid of me.”

I didn’t reply. I just looked at him. “Kael, thank you for saving me once. Goodbye.”

He didn’t say a word, his face stormy. He slammed the car door and sped off.

“Do you still love him?”

Darien was standing behind me. I turned, surprised.

“Why didn’t you leave?”

I thought he’d gone with Kael.

His face was dark, his usual calm composure gone.

“Elara, you’re divorced now. Kael’s going to marry Seraphina, like he always wanted. Don’t hold onto

someone who doesn’t love you.”

“So you divorced Seraphina to make him happy? Great brother you are.”

“But you’re right. I don’t want people who don’t love me.”

Darien grabbed my wrist. His scent surrounded me.

Once, Kael had asked me, “Girls say they like a guy’s cologne. What perfume does my brother use?”

I’d thought for a second. “Richboy cedar, I guess.”

Kael had laughed. “Cedar? Yeah, that’s just what a #2 pencil smells like.”

I opened my mouth to reply, but blood burst from my lips.

My vision went black. The last thing I saw was Darien’s terrified face.

Then everything went dark.
