The doctor called to ask when I’d pick up my medication.

I apologized and told him I wouldn’t need it.

Kael had frozen all my bank accounts out of spite.

It didn’t matter. What difference was one more month?

There was nothing left in my heart, death was creeping close..

I was going to see my parents soon.

Kael called. I almost didn’t answer, but I was so lonely I wanted to hear his voice.

The house was too quiet.

He was quiet for a long time. “Elara… if you don’t want to apologize, then don’t. You looked really sick the other day.”

“You haven’t been eating properly?”

“Can’t live without me that much? It’s just a divorce. You don’t have to stop eating.”

He nagged me like he used to.

I was annoyed.

“Are you crazy? Don’t bother me, Kael.”

He snapped. “Ungrateful. I was going to unfreeze your cards. But you’re still stubborn. Wait until the divorce

is final.”

I didn’t care anymore.

I’d just have to endure the pain. “Do what you want.”

The money wouldn’t help me anyway.

He was lucky. His exwife would die without leaving him any heirs.

He’d get everything, and no one would be left to spend it.

Darien called too. “Elara, I need to see you.”

I heard desperation in his voice. It was unreal.

I refused. “I don’t want to see you, Darien. Your brother already punished Seraphina for me.”

“This isn’t about her. I need to see you.”

“There’s nothing left to say. After I divorce your brother, I’ll never be part of the Blackwood family again.”

“Let me go. I don’t have the strength to fight anymore.”

How much longer did I have to live?

Why was everyone bothering me now?

The people who’d ignored me for five years were suddenly desperate to see me.

On the day we went to finalize the divorce, I woke up early.

I put on my favorite dress and stared at my reflection, gaunt and thin.

I looked frightening.

I hired a makeup artist to do my best look.

I was surprised when Kael came to pick me up.

I opened the car door.

Darien was sitting in the back seat.

They were so worried I’d back out that they brought his brother? The whole crew.

I hesitated, then sat in the front passenger seat.

Seraphina had already slept with my husband.

Sitting in her designated seat was kind of a way to get back at her.

I was pathetic.

Darien frowned, his face darkening.

Kael, though, smiled faintly.

That’s great for him.

I heard his wedding to Seraphina was almost planned.

They’d booked the biggest venue in town. After the ceremony, they’d go on honeymoon to Florence, her favorite place.

He was putting his whole heart into it. Nothing like our rushed wedding.

I was dying. I didn’t have the energy to hate or love anymore.

They just never loved me. That was all.

One had saved my life. The other had taken care of me all through school.

It didn’t matter if their love was real. I was too tired to care.

Kael drove, glancing at me. “Elara, you’re way too thin. You haven’t been eating.”

I rolled my eyes weakly. “Of course I have. Big meals every day.”

“Sure,” he said, smiling like he was still that kid who’d just come home.”You’re skin and bones. I’m…”

He tapped his chest. “I’m stressed and eating too much. I haven’t been eating right. I missed your cooking.”

He acted cute and whiny, like he used to.

It was strange. He’d acted like we were enemies the last time we saw each other.

“Let Seraphina cook for you.”

“I’d never let her lift a finger. She…”

Kael stopped himself and didn’t finish.

I ignored him. My body was at its limit.

One month of pure heartbreak, and I hadn’t taken the targeted therapy drugs.

The doctor said I wouldn’t make it through the day.

Before I left, I’d get the divorce papers. I’d go see my parents clean, with no strings attached.

No regrets. No debts. It was perfect.

If Kael had really loved me, leaving him would have broken me.

But he doesn’t love me… and that makes everything so much easier.
