The Voice Inside Me Was An AI, Not A Demon Chapter 08

It took the truth being stripped bare, piece by piece, before they finally started crying.

When they brought Angelica in, she fought it every step of the way.

She cried nonstop, begged my parents to take her home, and claimed she was severely depressed.

The detective pulled her medical records. No diagnosis existed. She’d paid someone to fake the paperwork

she showed my parents.

When she found out my parents and Adrian had already told the police everything, the act finally dropped.

“Yeah, I did it. So what?”

“Rafa always had to be better than me at everything!”

“I came first. I was born first. I should’ve been the favorite.”

“But she had to come right after me and take everything. Our parents‘ attention, our teachers‘ praise. Who

said she could have any of that?”

“She got what she deserved. She should’ve died the day she was born.”

My mom snapped. She threw herself at the table. “She’s your twin sister!”

Angelica turned to her and smiled. A cold, mocking smile.

“Oh, so now you remember she’s your daughter?”

“Who agreed to cover for me five minutes ago? Who found out I put a chip in her brain and still tried to save my Aldercrest admission?”

My mom’s hand stopped in midair, inches from Angelica’s face.

Angelica’s laugh went high and brittle. “You don’t get to judge me. I’m just more honest than you are.”

Adrian’s nails were buried in his own palms, his forehead pressed to the wall. “I should’ve believed her. How

did I keep falling for you?”

Angelica laughed like he’d told her the funniest thing she’d ever heard.

“Because you were shallow and stupid. Your ego did the rest.”

“Rafa buried herself in books and never bothered looking pretty. She actually believed you loved her for who

she was.”

“All I had to do was put on something cute and smile at you, and you’d follow me around like a dog.”

Adrian couldn’t say a word. His face was gray.

He couldn’t deny it.

He’d been a teenager, and teenagers are vain. He liked having a pretty girl pay attention to him. It was that simple.

I wore ratty hoodies and never tried. Angelica dressed herself up every day. Of course she fed his ego better

than I ever did.

Angelica was on a roll now, and nothing was going to stop her.

“There’s one more thing none of you know.”

“Before the SAT, I told Rafa that Mom and Dad were going to kick her out. That you’d leave her for me,

Adrian.”

“She clenched her jaw and said she’d get into the best school in the country. That she’d make it on her own. without any of you.”

“I hated that. I hated that nothing could break her.”

She raked her nails across the table like she was trying to claw my face off.

Then she laughed again.

“You heard the doctor. The chip doesn’t erase consciousness. What you don’t know is that I knew that from day one.”

Adrian froze. “What did you just say?”

The look on Angelica’s face was something past triumph. She looked unhinged.

“She was awake after the chip went in, and I knew it. The whole time. She could see everything, hear

everything. She just couldn’t move.”

“You made her kneel and kiss my shoes. You told her to roll down the stairs. You hit her. You called her a demon. You looked her in the eye and told her to die.”

“She heard every word.”

“The harder she fought, the higher the resistance readings spiked on my controller. I watched it happen every single time.”

“And I still didn’t let her go.”

My dad surged out of his chair toward Angelica, but his body gave out before he reached her.

He dropped to his knees, both hands gripping his skull. “That’s not… that can’t be…”

Angelica stared down at him.

“She’s dying, and now you want to play the good parents? Give it up.”

“You’re no different from me. Every single one of you helped destroy her.”

“Rafa knows everything. She’ll never forgive you. Not even in death.”
