They Made Me the Knight, But I Became My Own Princess Chapter 10

Three years later, Haventon.

The early-spring sun was bright and warm.

I walked across a park lawn holding my 2-year-old daughter’s hand.

She wore a pink princess dress and toddled after a butterfly.

Wade followed with a picnic basket, watching us with gentle eyes.

“Slow down. Don’t fall.”

He hurried forward and swept our daughter into his arms, making her dissolve into giggles.

I watched them play together and couldn’t keep from smiling.

Then my gaze stopped on a bench nearby.

Two elderly people sat huddled together. Their hair was gray, and their clothes were worn.

They stared at me without blinking, their faces crowded with emotion: shock, excitement, deep guilt, and desperate longing.

Mom and Dad.

I had no idea how they had scraped together the money for plane tickets or managed to find me.

Mom rose unsteadily and took two steps forward. She seemed to want to call my name, but her lips moved without producing a sound.

Dad stood too. He rubbed his hands together awkwardly and looked at me with pleading eyes.

I stopped. The smile faded from my face, leaving only calm indifference.

Wade sensed the change in me and followed my gaze.

His expression darkened instantly. He stepped in front of me on instinct.

“Do you want me to call security?” he asked quietly.

I shook my head.

“No.”

I took my daughter’s hand.

“Sweetheart, should we go play over there?”

She nodded obediently.

“Okay, Mommy.”

I didn’t look at the two elderly people again.

I turned and walked in the other direction without a moment’s hesitation.

Behind me came Mom’s stifled sob.

“Molly…”

Her voice was faint.

The wind carried it away almost at once.

I didn’t look back. There was no one behind me for whom I needed to step aside anymore.

At last, I had become my own princess.

Sunlight settled warmly over my shoulders.

There was still a long road ahead.

But I knew I would keep walking it exactly this way, without ever looking back.
