They Made Me the Knight, But I Became My Own Princess Chapter 07

They Made Me the Knight, But I Became My Own Princess Chapter 07

I said nothing.

Her breathing came fast and loud over the phone.

“Molly, say something. It’s Mom. Why would you change your number without telling your family? Do you have any idea how worried your father and I have been?”

I looked at the clear blue sky beyond the balcony.

“What do you want?”

My cold tone silenced her for a moment. When she spoke again, her voice had turned coaxing. “Molly, are you still angry with me? What happened before was my fault. I shouldn’t have forced you to give Sadie your engagement. Now that you’re already with Wade, could you…”

She paused, as if embarrassed to continue.

“Could you ask Wade to help the family? The company’s cash flow has collapsed. Your father’s been so worried that his hair has turned white. You can’t just stand by and watch everything this family built fall apart, can you?”

I gave a soft laugh.

“Everything this family built? Did I own even one tiny piece of it?”

Mom grew frantic.

“How can you say that? You’re a Farley daughter. Everything we have will belong to you and your sister eventually. Sadie has been in terrible shape. She cries at home every day. She’s young and doesn’t know any better. As her older sister, can’t you be generous?”

The same tired argument again. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

“She’s 22 years old. She’s not a child. If she wants to be treated like a princess, she can shoulder a princess’s responsibilities. If the company goes bankrupt, sell the house, the cars, and all her couture gowns. Don’t come to me.”

I hung up and blocked the number.

Wade emerged from the kitchen carrying two mugs of warm milk and handed one to me.

“Hung up?”

“Yeah.”

I cradled the warm mug in my hands.

“They still think a few sweet words will make me fall in line like before.”

Wade stroked my hair,

“If you don’t want to listen, hang up immediately. You don’t have to force yourself to hear their

nonsense.”

Back home, in the Farley villa, Mom shook with rage as the disconnected tone sounded in her ear.

“She’s gone too far! She actually hung up on me!”

Dad sat on the couch with his face buried in his hands.

“What did she say?”

Mom gritted her teeth.

“She told us to sell the house and the cars to cover the debt! That heartless little beast wants to

watch us die!”

Sadie came downstairs. She had lost a great deal of weight, and her eyes were sunken.

She heard Mom and sneered.

“I told you she was an ungrateful parasite. You were the ones who insisted on begging her. Now look. She has you right where she wants you.”

Dad jerked his head up and glared at her.

“You have some nerve saying that! If you hadn’t insisted on stealing that engagement, would any of this have happened?”

Sadie flinched, then lifted her chin in defiance.

“Why are you blaming me? You created the card game. You made the rules. You’re the ones who told me I was the princess and could have anything I wanted. Now that something has gone wrong, you’re putting all the blame on me? What kind of parents are you?”

She grabbed the car keys from the entryway.

“I can’t stand another second in this miserable house!”

The front door slammed.

Silence settled over the living room again.

Mom covered her face and began to sob in despair.

Dad stared at the empty house and suddenly remembered the past.

Whenever tension had filled the home, his older daughter had silently made tea, cut fruit, set

everything beside them, then quietly retreated to her corner.

Now that corner was empty.
