They Made Me the Knight, But I Became My Own Princess Chapter 05

They Made Me the Knight, But I Became My Own Princess Chapter 05

Dad immediately stood and went to greet him.

“And you are?”

The man gave a polite bow.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Farley. I’m Mr. Keaton’s executive assistant. He has an important matter to

attend to today and couldn’t come in person. He specifically asked me to deliver these.”

Disappointment flickered across Sadie’s face before she replaced it with a sweet smile.

“That’s all right. Wade is busy with work. I understand. Are these my engagement gifts?”

The assistant set the boxes on the table, stepped back, and resumed his professional expression

“There’s been a misunderstanding, Miss Farley. These aren’t engagement gifts. Mr. Keaton asked

me to deliver them to Mr. and Mrs. Farley as gifts of thanks.”

Dad stared at him.

“Gifts of thanks? For what?”

The assistant took a gold-embossed invitation from his pocket and presented it to Dad with both

hands.

“For raising such an exceptional daughter as Miss Molly Farley. The flight carrying Mr. Keaton and Miss Farley has already departed. They’ll be married in Haventon next month. This is your

invitation.”

The private room went deathly still.

Dad’s hand jerked, and the invitation fell to the floor.

On the open page, the names Wade Keaton and Molly Farley gleamed in gold.

Sadie stared at the dazzling letters. The smug smile on her face froze completely.

Dad’s knees buckled. He collapsed back into his chair, his face slack with shock.

“That’s a lie!”

Mom recovered first, her voice rising into a shriek.

She shot to her feet and knocked over Add to Library her. Tea flooded across the table. “Molly went to her university for a project. How could she have left the country with Wade? Besides, Sadie is the one engaged to the Keaton family.”

Sadie’s face turned deathly pale. She stared at the invitation on the floor, trembling uncontrollably.

“No… This can’t be happening! I drew the princess card. Molly agreed to give me the engagement!”.

The assistant’s expression didn’t change. His smile remained impeccably polite.

“Mrs. Farley, Mr. Keaton personally handled Miss Farley’s travel documents. As for the

engagement…”

He paused and looked at Sadie.

“The Keaton family has only ever recognized Miss Molly Farley as Mr. Keaton’s fiancée.

“Mr. Keaton also asked me to inform you that he and Miss Farley met and fell in love 3 years ago! Out of respect for the fact that you gave her life, Miss Farley refused to let him interfere in your family affairs. That’s the only reason you weren’t told. As for your card game, it’s children’s make-believe and has no bearing on a legal engagement.”

“That’s impossible! He’s Sadie’s fiancé!” Mom screamed.

She tried to tear the invitation apart, but the thick, gold-foiled card only acquired an ugly crease

along its edge.

Sadie glared at the names Wade Keaton and Molly Farley printed side by side. The last trace of triumph in her eyes shattered.

She sprang up so violently that her chair toppled behind her. Ignoring it, she stumbled toward the

assistant.

“Did Molly trick Wade? She must have! She’s been jealous of me since we were children. She must have seduced him behind our backs.”

The assistant looked at her coldly, as if she were making a spectacle of herself. Mockery sharpened his voice.

“Miss Sadie Farley, Mr. Keaton knows exactly what he’s doing. He also asked me to tell Mr. and Mrs. Farley that he has taken the ‘princess card’ with its deliberately rounded edges as evidence.

“Cheating to manipulate one biological daughter for the sake of the other is a disgraceful way to raise a family. Your parenting has certainly been eye-opening.”

His words struck Mom and Dad like a slap, ripping away their masks of righteousness.

Dad’s face turned livid. He grabbed the assistant by the collar.

“What does the Keaton family think it’s doing?”

The assistant calmly removed Dad’s hand.

“Control yourself, Mr. Farley. Mr. Keaton’s position has been made perfectly clear. The gifts have

been delivered, so I’ll be leaving now.”

The room sank into dead silence as the assistant walked away.

Sadie suddenly burst into hysterical sobs. She snatched a gift box from the table and hurled it onto

the floor.

“They’re all liars! Who does Molly think she is, stealing what’s mine?”

Mom wrapped her arms around Sadie and comforted her while fumbling for her phone.

“Don’t cry, Sadie. I’ll call that ungrateful girl right now. She’s gotten completely out of control if she thinks she can scheme against this family!”

She placed the call, but a cold automated voice answered.

“We’re sorry. The number you have dialed is currently unavailable.”

“Her phone is off!” Mom slammed her phone onto the table. “That ungrateful brat must be feeling

guilty!”

Dad yanked off his tie in frustration.

“I knew something was wrong when she left with a suitcase this morning. She planned to run off with a man all along. She’s humiliated the entire Farley family.”

On the plane, I switched off my phone and lowered the window shade.

The cabin was quiet. Wade sat beside me, reading a document,

He noticed my movement and turned.

“Turned it off?”

“Yeah.”

I leaned back and closed my eyes.

“I don’t want to hear them yell.”

Wade closed the file and took my hand. His palm was dry and warm, steady heat seeping into my

skin.

“You’ll never have to listen again. Get a new number once we arrive.”

I opened my eyes and looked at him.

“Wade, they’re probably furious that you sent your assistant to the hotel.”

He chuckled, running his thumb lightly over the veins on the back of my hand.

“Good. They deserve to be. If you hadn’t insisted on handling this yourself, I would have stepped in

a long time ago. They took everything from you as if it were their right for 22 years. You’re only reclaiming what was always yours.”

He leaned closer. My reflection shone in his dark eyes.

“Molly, starting today, you don’t have to be anyone’s knight.”

My eyes suddenly burned.

I rested my head on his shoulder.

“Okay.”

The plane broke through the clouds, and sunlight poured freely into the cabin.

For the first time in 22 years, the sun felt warm.
