The System Gave Me One Job Then Regretted Choosing Me Chapter 08

I had arranged for the attorney through the System before my death.

He was one of New York’s most feared litigators, the attorney old-money families called when their private wars turned ugly.

Once the three Whitmores had been removed from my room, he entered carrying a thick stack of files.

“Miss Reed, I found everything you asked for.”

He handed me the documents with quiet professionalism.

I opened the first file.

It contained every medical record and financial transaction from Vivian’s twenty years with the Whitmores, along with evidence that Adrian had misappropriated company funds.

“Good work.”

I closed the file and returned it.

“Put it all out there, exactly as planned.”

The next three days were the darkest in Whitmore family history.

The evidence that Vivian had forged her medical records went public.

She had never had asthma. Every attack, every fainting spell, every moment of weakness had been staged to win sympathy and keep everyone’s attention on her.

Worse, she had been using Whitmore money to support an old flame overseas.

When the family’s public relations crisis began, she even tried to move money out of their accounts.

Her spotless image shattered beyond repair.

Eleanor had trusted her completely for twenty years. When she saw the evidence, she fainted.

The moment she regained consciousness, she stormed into Vivian’s room and slapped her twice.

“I gave you everything for twenty years, and this is how you repay us? You used this family from the beginning!”

Eleanor collapsed into sobs. At last, she understood that she had driven away her own daughter for a girl who had been exploiting them all.

Remorse that came this late was worthless.

I could not be bothered to watch.

At the same time, Adrian’s business empire began to collapse.

Whitmore Holdings shares plunged for five straight trading sessions. Shareholders joined forces and demanded his resignation.

The man who had always put profit and control first was finally being devoured by both.

On the fourth afternoon, Grant came to my room.

His old confidence was gone. His eyes were sunken, and dark stubble covered his jaw.

The Caldwell Group had been pulled into the investigation and exposed for multiple tax violations. Grant’s status as the Caldwell empire’s presumed successor was suddenly in doubt.

“Emma…”

He stopped three steps from the bed, his voice dry.

“Vivian is out of my life. Completely. Our engagement can still go forward.”

He looked at me, trying to recover a scrap of his old dignity.

“We can start over. I promise I’ll treat you well.”

I studied the man who now looked like a beaten stray.

“Grant.”

I spoke his name softly.

“Do you know why I tried to kill myself?”

He froze.

“It wasn’t because you treated me badly.”

His pupils tightened as I continued in the same calm voice.

“It was because none of you were worth hating.”

“You’re selfish, dishonest, and smug. You commit the ugliest cruelties while congratulating yourselves on being civilized.”

“Being in the same room with any of you made every breath feel filthy.”

All the color left Grant’s face.

Under my indifferent gaze, the last of his pride collapsed.

“Get out.”

I closed my eyes.

“Get out. I can barely stand the air with you in it.”
