The System Gave Me One Job Then Regretted Choosing Me Chapter 07

The morgue was bitterly cold.

I opened my eyes and pushed the heavy drawer outward.

Forty-eight hours of death had reset my body. The thick, crushing fatigue of depression was gone.

In its place was perfect clarity, cold and absolute.

“A ghost!”

The night attendant had just walked in with a cup of instant noodles. The moment he saw me sit up, he dropped his dinner and fled, stumbling over his own feet.

Ten minutes later, the entire hospital was in chaos.

Adrian had been released after questioning while the investigation remained ongoing. Before he could even change out of his wrinkled suit, the hospital called.

By the time he arrived, I was propped against the pillows in a private room, calmly eating the warm oatmeal a nurse had brought me.

The door flew open.

Adrian stood there, breathing hard. His eyes were bloodshot.

He stared at me as if trying to determine whether I was real.

“Emma…”

His voice was raw. He moved toward the bed one heavy step at a time.

“You’re alive. Thank God. You’re really alive.”

He reached for my shoulder.

The hand that had taken my phone and confiscated my medication now shook uncontrollably.

I leaned away before he could touch me.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

My voice was cool and even.

“You’re under investigation for unlawful imprisonment, and you’re already approaching the victim. Aren’t you worried about making your situation worse?”

His hand froze in midair.

The hope in his eyes shattered.

“Emma, I was wrong.”

He lowered his head. For the first time, his proud, composed face held a plea.

“I should have believed you. I should never have taken your medication. Punish me however you want, but please don’t hurt yourself again.”

“Punish you?”

I set down the bowl, almost amused.

“Adrian, do you honestly believe you’re still in a position to ask for forgiveness as if you’re granting me a favor?”

Footsteps rushed down the hall.

Eleanor stumbled into the room with Vivian supporting her.

The instant Eleanor saw me alive, tears flooded her face.

“Emma!”

She lunged forward to embrace me, then stopped beneath my cold stare.

“I know I failed you. I swear I’ll never choose Vivian over you again.”

Behind her, Vivian’s eyes reddened. Her voice came out small and timid.

“I’m so glad you’re alive, Emma. If anything had happened to you, I never would have forgiven myself.”

She still wore the same wounded, gentle expression.

As if none of this had anything to do with her.

I picked up a napkin and wiped my mouth.

“Vivian, the police have opened an investigation into your fraudulent asthma records.”

I watched her expression lock into place.

“You forged medical records, defrauded hospitals, and used a fake diagnosis to manipulate everyone around you for years. After the week you’ve had online, how eager do you think prosecutors will be to make an example of you?”

Vivian staggered back, her face turning white.

“I didn’t… Emma, you don’t understand…”

“You can explain it to the police.”

I turned to Eleanor and Adrian.

“Now get out.”

“I’m meeting with my attorney.”
