The leg wound went septic and Magnus ended up back in a hospital bed.

They ran a full workup on me too.

Early the next morning, the Beta brought the file to his room.

Magnus took a breath before he opened it.

The further he read, the worse the color in his face got.

Aelia had slapped me in a room full of people and called me a mistress, and it had nothing to do with me flaunting a title. She’d started it.

He didn’t look away.

“Sunna sees a defect grown in a laboratory. Aelia sees a tool that isn’t owed respect.

I said the rest slowly.

“And you told me you loved me while looking at me from the exact same height they do.”

My throat closed and I pushed through it.

“But my soul weighs the same as yours. I love. I bleed. And I get to be the one who doesn’t forgive.”

“Thank you for getting to the water in time. You saved my life. Let’s call it the debt settled.”

I turned toward the door.

I left the room.

He watched me go and tried to say something to stop me, and not one word came.
