She Said She’d Watch My Man. Then She Stole Him Chapter 10

The winter wind in New York was cold.

I pulled my coat tighter and stood outside the hotel waiting for a car.

“Mira.”

The voice came from behind. Hoarse.

I paused.

Footsteps approached.

In the corner of my eye, a pair of handmade black leather shoes stopped near me.

“Mira.”

He said my full name.

I looked up.

His slicked–back hair had fallen loose.

His tie was crooked, like someone had pulled at it.

He’d run out of the event.

“I miss you.”

I frowned.

“But I can’t find a reason to show up in front of you.”

He stepped forward, then stopped.

“You told me to stop sending things.”

“But you never returned the ring. Or the dress. I thought that meant at least-”

“At least what?” I asked calmly.

He opened his mouth.

“At least… keeping my things means you haven’t let go. Right?”

He looked at me. A flicker of hope shone through.

I smiled, “I didn’t return them because they don’t matter anymore.”

His fingers trembled at his side.

He slowly closed them into a fist.

“Mira. All these years, I’ve been thinking about you.”

“I always knew I couldn’t lose you. So I gave you my best side.”

“I buried my flaws. My selfishness.”

“Over time, I started questioning who I really was.”

“With you, I couldn’t let go for even a second.”

“I pushed too hard. I made a terrible mistake.”

For the first time, I saw him look truly lost.

“I was wrong once. I don’t want to be wrong again.‘

“Give me a chance, Mira. Let me start over.”

“I’ll be better. Please.”

He was always so controlled. So perfect.

Now his voice was shaking. Tears fell.

Guests who had left early were passing by.

Some stopped. Some whispered.

Dorian was too noticeable.

I reached out and pulled the edge of his coat. “Dorian.”

He looked at me. His eyes brightened.

I led him to the side door.

“When I loved you, I loved you as you were.”

“I didn’t love your good side–I loved you. But you made a mistake. A big one.”

The light in his eyes went out.

“I wanted to love the Dorian who was also tired.”

“Who was afraid. Who was a mess.”

“But you always wore a perfect mask in front of me. And behind it, you broke everything.”

I turned away. “It was you who tore me and Sera apart.”

Mira…‘

“Don’t come looking for me again.”

I walked toward the car waiting at the curb.

“Mira!”

I didn’t look back. I got in the car.

Through the window, I saw him frozen at the entrance.

The car pulled away. His reflection grew smaller in the rearview mirror.

I leaned back and closed my eyes.

The neon lights outside flickered past–one after another, like the years, falling away.

One by one, they faded to dark.

And I was ready. For something new.
