The rain flooded New York.

By the time the assistant brought a new car and Dorian got home, it was past midnight.

Six hours.

I still hadn’t replied to Sera.

So he turned his phone off.

Almost like he was punishing me.

He’d never been this stubborn with me before.

But Sera had cried so hard her face was swollen.

She even had a fever.

For once, Dorian wanted to show me there were boundaries.

I couldn’t just disappear.

He opened the door.

The apartment was dark.

For a moment, he froze. I wasn’t there.

Sera was even more frantic.

She ran inside and turned on the hall light.

She saw my nude heels from the fitting–still lined up on the shoe rack.

He let out a breath.

They both thought I was home.

Dorian remembered something.

He pulled out his work phone.

The boutique manager had messaged.

He told her to keep every dress I’d tried on. –

Ten minutes later, she replied with two smiley faces.

He frowned. What did that mean?

He turned on every light.

Halfway up the spiral staircase, he heard Sera cry out.

He ran to the bedroom.

She was crumpled by the bed, clutching something, sobbing into the mattress.

When she saw him, her feverish face reddened with anger.

“Dorian, we messed up! We messed up so bad.”

His heart dropped.

He walked over and took what she was holding.

A small plain ring. The engagement ring he’d given me.

He turned and opened the closet.

My clothes were gone. The suitcase under the bed was gone too.

He stumbled.

Sera grabbed the ring from him,

“Mira must have found out. She must know about that night!”

He frowned. “No way.”

“Why not!”

She fell to the floor.

She remembered the post, “I can’t lose Mira.”

He put a hand on her shoulder, “She’s probably just upset about her mother’s charm.”

“That was the only thing her mother left her.”

“Her mother’s… only thing?”

A wave of fear and regret hit Sera.

She had slept with her best friend’s boyfriend.

And she’d broken her mother’s last gift.

Her hands shook as she grabbed her phone to call me.

Off. Blocked.

She stared at my gray avatar.

Dorian frowned. He thought I was being dramatic.

He turned on his phone. My message appeared.

“We’re done.”

He froze.

Sera lunged at the screen.

When she saw it, she broke down.

She looked at him with anger in her eyes.

“This is your fault. I was wrong. I actually thought you were different.”

“But in the end, you still hurt Mira.”

She collapsed, spent, “I should have stopped you two from ever getting together.”

“We shouldn’t see each other anymore.”
