Three Years in Europe for Everyone—Except His Pregnant Wife Chapter 08

I was left speechless with rage.

I was about to snap back at him when Rae’s soft, whimpering cry of pain rang out not far away-

she’d fallen.

Her voice drew Ethan’s attention right over.

“Are you hurt?”

“I twisted my ankle.”

Rae shot me a deliberately provocative glance, but her words rang false and saccharine.

“Ethan, don’t fuss over me. Yvonne might get upset.”

She pressed herself against Ethan’s chest, their bodies pressed close, the tension between them

obvious. Ethan’s full focus landed on her sprained ankle.

“It’s alright. Let me take a look at your foot first.”

I let out a cold scoff.

I didn’t linger for another second and walked straight out of the mall.

Once Ethan had tended to Rae’s ankle, he lifted his gaze, only to find I was long gone.

A restless, prickling sense of anxiety ate away at him.

After grabbing the items they needed, he hit the gas and headed straight for my mom’s place.

Rae’s heart twisted with tangled anxiety.

Part of her wanted Ethan to learn the truth that their marriage was already over.

But another part of her dreaded him finding out.

She sat there on edge the whole ride, trying to come up with excuses to stop Ethan several times. In the end, she stood outside the front door alongside Ethan.

They rang the doorbell for quite a while before a middle–aged woman in an apron finally answered. From her appearance, she was clearly the household housekeeper.

Ethan spoke politely.

“Hello. I’m Yvonne’s husband.”

The housekeeper sized him up, thoroughly confused.

“You’ve got the wrong place. No one named Yvonne lives here.”

“It’s just me and an eighty–year–old grandmother staying in this house.”

Something clicked in the housekeeper’s mind, and she kept talking.

“This house was bought by the old lady’s son two years ago.”

“The former owners moved out long ago.”

Shock washed over Ethan.

He hadn’t been able to reach Yvonne’s mom by phone for three years. Now the property had been

sold without a single word to him.

A heavy sense of unease settled deeper inside him.

On the drive back, his mind was elsewhere, and he drove absent–mindedly.

Rae stepped in with her soothing, understanding act.

“Don’t push yourself too hard. Women just need time to cool down”

“Maybe after some time passes, Yvonne will get over her anger.”

Ethan’s face stayed grim, his mood did not lighten one bit.

Rae shifted the subject.

“Oh right, I heard Auntie mention you’ve got a birthday party to attend the day after tomorrow.” “Gatherings like that usually call for a plus–one or spouse to tag along.”

“I don’t think Yvonne will be ready to make up anytime soon. Why don’t I go with you? We can’t let

your important plans go to waste.”

Ethan said nothing, still driving with his mind wandering. Rae took his silence as consent.

Kai Peirce flew back from his overseas business trip the night before his mother’s birthday

celebration. He got home at midnight.

I cooked him a beef–and–mushroom pot pies with my own hands.

Staring down at the steaming hot dish, he pulled me into a tight hug, overwhelmed.

“This feels so perfect.”

I still had my apron on. Afraid grease would stain his suit jacket, I gently pulled back out of his

embrace.

single bowl of this wins you over that easily? You don’t ask for much.”

He pulled me back into his arms and swayed happily where we stood.

“It’s not the food itself that matters. It’s the thought behind it.”

“Without you, I’d never get late–night meals like this. I’d never feel the warmth of someone keeping a light on for me after dark.”

I rested my cheek against his chest, listening to his steady, warm heartbeat.

“I’m happy too. This happiness is all because of you.”

“Hurry and eat before it gets cold.”

I sat across from him and watched him polish off every last bite.

A warm rush of contentment flooded through my chest.
