“Mr. Rourke, everything looks correct here.”

“The groom is Callan Rourke, and the bride is Sabine Elwood. What needs to be changed?”

Callan’s temper snapped.

“Sabine Elwood? Who authorized you to list her as the bride?”

The coordinator stammered.

“Mr. Rourke, please calm down. Our records don’t show a mistake.”

“Last week, your coworker Ms. Voss contacted us and asked us to change the bride’s name to Sabine

Elwood.”

“She specifically said you were busy and that we didn’t need to confirm it with you.”

Callan went pale.

“What do you mean, Ms. Voss?”

The coordinator clarified.

“Merritt Voss. Isn’t she your coworker?”

Callan lost his temper.

“Coworker? Merritt Voss is my fiancée!”

“What?”

The coordinator clearly hadn’t expected that.

“Ms. Voss gave us those instructions herself. I’m sorry we proceeded without verifying them.”

“How would you like us to proceed, Mr. Rourke?”

Callan hung up, his head buzzing.

He contacted every other classmate who’d received an invitation.

He asked whose name appeared as the bride.

Every answer was the same.

Sabine Elwood, not Merritt Voss.

After asking everyone, Callan collapsed onto the couch.

How was that possible?

Why had Merritt changed the name on their invitations?

He found her email and flooded her inbox.

[Merritt, what the hell is this? Why did you change the bride’s name to Sabine Elwood?]

[You can be angry, but this has gone too far. Did you think about me at all?]

[The wedding is tomorrow. If I hadn’t found out today, were you planning to humiliate me in front of everyone?]

[Where are you? Your phone is off, and you’re ignoring every message. Are you trying to worry me to death?]

No matter what he sent, nothing came back.

Eventually, Callan gave in.

[Merritt, will you please pick up? Whatever’s wrong, can’t we talk about it face-to-face?]

Silence was his only answer.
