Tristan walked in. He scanned the room, found no empty seat, and had the nerve to ask the server to

squeeze in an extra chair.

“Don’t mind me. Pretend I’m not here.”

He asked for a glass of water and took a sip like he belonged there. I ignored him and kept talking with my team. Everyone else exchanged glances and quietly picked at their food.

I pushed away the plate he’d placed in front of me. He didn’t seem bothered. He just slid it back.

In the past, I’d been the one doing these small things for him. He never lifted a finger. Now he was suddenly

willing to wait on me. How fascinating.

“I know you’re upset. But I want you to know-I don’t want this divorce. I’ll handle things at the company.”

“I get that some of your team resigned with you. But what about the others? Even if I can’t control the ones who left, I can still manage the employees who stayed.”

“Just come back to me, and I’ll forget about everything they did.”

Was he offering me an olive branch or threatening me? He knew I cared about loyalty. He thought he could

se my team as leverage.

I didn’t respond. But one of my team members slammed his glass down.

“Mr. Hale, there’s exactly one person in this room who works for you-and she’s standing behind you.”

“Our entire department resigned with our boss. You can’t control us!”

Tristan flinched. He fumbled his cup and spilled boiling water on his hand. The skin turned red instantly. Faye started to call for a server, but he waved her off.

He turned to the person who’d spoken. “This isn’t funny. If your whole department had resigned, I would’ve

heard about it.”

“I’m giving you all a chance to come back. Think it through. The company’s growing. There’s real opportunity here. What do you think you’re gonna find out there?”

I took a sip of tea. I didn’t even glance at the blisters forming on his hand. “He’s telling the truth. They all resigned with me. HR already informed you. So stop playing dumb.”

The color drained from Tristan’s face. He called HR on the spot.

“Who authorized Nadia’s team to resign?! Why wasn’t I notified about something this big?!”

“I pay you to sit around and screw up?!”

HR took the abuse and then answered, his voice full of frustration. “Mr. Hale, I… I asked you. You approved it

yourself.”

“You said anyone who wants to follow Mrs. Hale out the door-don’t stop them.”

Tristan went silent. He’d said that out of anger. He’d thought Nadia was just threatening him. She loved him

too much to actually leave.

Now he couldn’t take it back. So he took it out on HR. “You made a mistake and now you’re making excuses? Do you have any idea how much revenue Nadia brought in? Are you blind or just stupid?!”

“You’ve been nothing but a problem. You’re fired. Clean out your desk and leave.”

He hung up, fuming. Then he softened his voice for me.

“This was all a misunderstanding. I’ve handled HR. Your resignations can all be voided. You’re still part of the company.”

“I’ll give you back your position. You’ll still be project director. As for Faye, I’ll find her something else.”

He paused before forcing out that last part. But I didn’t need it anymore.

“No thanks. I already found a new company.”

Tristan shot to his feet. He knocked over his plate. It shattered on the floor.

“What did you say?!”

“Think carefully. Without the company backing you, what do you think you and your team can accomplish? You’re nothing outside of this company!”

“Sorry to break it to you, Mr. Hale, but our boss got us into Meridian Group. Maybe you should worry about your own company-and whether your precious Faye can actually run the department without us.”

My team member tossed the Meridian Group offer letter on the table. Tristan’s face went pale.

“That’s impossible!”
