She Died Waiting for My Husband’s Approval Chapter 09

The judge bound her over on all counts within the hour.

Reckless endangerment resulting in death. Falsification of a fraud report. Misuse of corporate authorization

seals. Obstruction.

Bail was denied when the DA disclosed that Celeste had booked a one–way flight to a country with no extradition treaty for the Thursday after the hearing.

They took her out through the side door.

She turned once, in the doorway, and looked for me in the gallery.

I let her find me.

I didn’t smile. I didn’t gloat.

I just looked back, steady, for four full seconds, until a deputy put a hand on her arm and she was gone.

That was the whole thing.

Six weeks of my life, three years of my dignity, and the last hours of my grandmother’s, ended by four seconds of eye contact and a door closing.

Outside, the steps were a wall of phones.

Ruth went first, because Ruth enjoys this.

“Ms. Danner, is it true Captain Calloway invented the Calloway Approach?”

“It’s got her name on it, doesn’t it?”

“Is it true Ashford Air has been trying to license it for two years?”

Ruth smiled beatifically.

“You’d have to ask Ashford Air.”

Graham was waiting at the bottom of the steps.

Not blocking. Not reaching.

Just standing in the cold with his tie in his pocket, like a man who’d finally met a wall he couldn’t buy, sell, or

restructure.

Cole made a low

he.

“I’ve got it,” I said.

I walked down.

Graham looked at me and, for once, didn’t lead with à sulution

“I signed the divorce yesterday,” he said. “Unconditional. The prenup is void by mutual waiver you get the standard division. My counsel has it.”

“I don’t want it.”

“I know.” His voice was raw. “Take it anyway. Give it away. Burn it. I’m not asking you to be gracious.”

I said nothing.

He looked past me at nothing.

“Twenty–eight million,” he said. “I approved that offer in March. From my office. Two floors above the room where you filed a request to buy a coat.”

“Yes.”

“I’ve been chasing your work for two years while I told people at dinner that my wife didn’t do anything.”

“Yes.”

He laughed, once, and it was a terrible sound.

“Do you know what the worst part is?”

“Tell me.”

He looked at me then, and I watched something in him finally break all the way through.

“It’s that I don’t remember any of it. The forms. The applications. The galas where you were late. You were being humiliated in my house for three years and I wasn’t even paying enough attention to enjoy it.”

“You weren’t cruel to me, Graham,” I said. “You just never once considered that I was real.”

“Is there a difference?”

“To you? No.”

“To me?” I said. “It’s the whole difference.”

He nodded slowly, like a man being sentenced.

“What do you want from me?” he asked. “Name anything. I’m not saying that as a man with money. I’m saving

it as-”

He stopped.

“Nothing,” I said.

He’d braced for anger. Anger he could have worked with. Anger is engagement.

“Nothing” landed like a bat.

“I don’t need your protection,” I said. “I don’t need your money and I never needed your permission. What I needed was for you to see me, and you didn’t, and now there’s a woman in the ground.”

“So there’s nothing you can give me.”

“That’s not a punishment. That’s just the shape of it.“.

I stepped back.

“Goodbye, Graham.”

I made it to the truck before my hands started shaking.

Cole started the engine, pulled out, and drove three miles without saying anything, which is one of the four best qualities of Cole Brennan.

Then, at a red light:

“You want food or you want to go back to work?”

I laughed. It came out wet.

“Work.”

“Thought so.”

My phone buzzed. Ruth.

Turn on channel 4.

Cole changed lanes.

“Or maybe he finally counted how many other Junes there are.”

I looked out the window at the guardrails going by.

“How many do you think?” I said quietly.

He didn’t answer.

Four days later, the audit’s first partial release came out.

Two hundred and eleven denials flagged.

Nineteen deaths.

And that was only the first six months.
