They Chose My Sister and Lost Me Chapter 08

Over the next few days, he didn’t leave.

But he didn’t bother me either. He just stood outside the coffee shop every day, rain or shine, keeping his vigil.

Less than a week later, my brother took up the spot beside him. He still carried himself with the same haughty air, but his eyes darted away when he saw me.

Umberto had to shove my brother before he would come near me. When he finally did, he sneered, I thought you’d run off to do something important. But this pathetic little shop is all you’ve got? Let’s see how long it lasts.”

I didn’t dignify him with an answer. I gave him one look and walked around him.

That only made him angrier. He stepped into my path. “Adele, lose the attitude!”

“The one I have. Don’t like it? Don’t look at me.”

His hand shook with rage. He raised it to slap me, but Umberto caught his arm and warned him to control himself

Only then did he rein himself in.

“You think you’re so impressive, don’t you? How did this Family ever raise an ungrateful brat like you? Because of you, Mom and Dad are being torn apart by the whole clan. They’re about to lose everything!”

“Are you happy now? Huh?”

Was I happy? Absolutely. I laughed in his face.

“So what? How is any of that my problem?”

He had no answer. He grabbed my wrist. “This is all because of you. Now Beth can’t even touch the Family’s business, and everyone knows she was expelled!”

“People like you deserve to die. You’re selfish, and this Family has no place for you.”

I remained perfectly calm.

He blamed every last bit of it on me.

“I’m not part of this Family, so spare me the outrage.” I pulled my hand free, turned my back on him, and went upstairs.

Another two weeks passed. They still hadn’t left.

Instead, they got worse. They barged into my coffee shop and drove out my customers, so I called the police on the spot.

At the station, I laid out the facts and was free to go.

My brother and Umberto were detained over the incident. I knew that once they got out, they would be right back to disrupting my life.

So I packed my things, planning to get away for a while.

I would come back once some time had passed. I didn’t want to see either of them again.

Just as I was about to leave, the Don of the Cassano Family came in person. He removed his gloves as he stepped inside and studied me with a gaze that was warm but solemn.

“Ms. Ricci, I have tremendous respect for your abilities. I hope you’ll join the Cassano Family and become one of

I had received their invitation while I was still abroad.

I had turned them down once before.

I had no desire to return to that kind of complicated life. I liked what I had: my cat, my own little world.

“I’m sorry, but that’s not something I’m considering. I’d like to stay here and do my own thing.”

I didn’t hesitate.

The Don frowned but didn’t take offense. He nodded, looked around the shop, and lit a cigar. “I’ve heard what happened to you. I can deal with the Ricci Family on your behalf. Please reconsider.”

“Your talent is exactly what we need. I sincerely hope you’ll join us.”

His offer was sincere, but I was done with that world. As for the Riccis, I had no energy left to waste on people who had never valued me.

Before I could answer, my brother and Umberto burst in. My brother pointed at me. “Adele, just try doing anything that hurts this Family. I dare you!”

Umberto took one look at the Don and held back. He tried reasoning with me instead. “Adele, what happened before is in the past. Don’t take it to heart. Come home with us. We’re all still family.”

The Don was visibly displeased by the interruption.

One look from the Don was enough. His bodyguards stormed in from outside and slammed both men to the floor.

My brother kept threatening me even from the ground. “You traitor, if you go running your mouth, I will kill you!”
