They Chose My Sister and Lost Me Chapter 06

The elder who had praised Beth seconds earlier changed her tune instantly. She scoffed. “And here I thought Beth was impressive. So it was favoritism all along, while the truly gifted daughter was treated like garbage”

“Exactly. We all saw it.”

“Beth, that necklace you’re wearing, it’s Adele’s, isn’t it?”

Beth ducked behind Mother, instinctively lowering her chin to hide the necklace at her throat.

My brother still hadn’t recovered from the photograph.

“Impossible! There has to be a mistake.”

“She never even had a decent tutor! She never came to the library with us. How could she possibly have won all those awards?”

I’d never had a tutor because our parents only thought of Beth. It had never occurred to them that I might need help too.

But without that option, all I could do was push myself as hard as I possibly could.

As for the library, they never invited me anywhere during our years abroad, not to parties and not to the library.

It was always just the three of them.

I was the one left on the outside.

The underboss gave them a cool, contemptuous look. “The Don sent me for Adele Ricci. I don’t care what any of you think. I only need to find her.”

“Tell me where she is.”

“I need to discuss the terms we’re offering.”

“If you know where she is and you’re deliberately hiding it…” He surveyed the room. “I will report exactly what I’ve seen to the Don.”

Father froze. The Cassano Family was not one they could afford to cross.

But he had no idea where I was. All he remembered was that my brother had just dragged me out.

They had dragged me out of the banquet hall in front of everyone.

My already–worn dress had been torn to shreds.

Father spun on my brother, stammering, “C… call her. Call her now.”

My brother pulled out his phone. His wrist was shaking. He tapped my number, but the call wouldn’t go through.

He tried again. Still nothing.

Mother cursed him for being useless and dialed from her own phone. She had her words all prepared, but after two rings the result was the same.

Father tried next. Even Beth, reluctant as she was, had no choice but to pull out her phone.

She sent me a message.

That was when she discovered I had blocked her.

Beth went livid. No matter how badly they had treated me before, I had never dared do anything like this.

I always answered their calls immediately and replied to their texts just as fast.

I never left a single message unanswered.

And now I had actually blocked them.

Umberto scrambled for his phone and texted me:

[Did you block all of them?]

[Unblock them right now. Don’t do this.]

The two messages went out back to back. Neither went through.

Umberto’s expression froze.

The atmosphere in the banquet hall shifted. The Family elders watched like it was a spectacle.

The underboss read the situation and didn’t linger.

“If that’s how it is, I’ll go back and tell the Don exactly what I’ve seen here.”

Father tried to stop him. The underboss left without looking back.

Mother collapsed to the floor.

My brother was shaking too, muttering under his breath. Suddenly he grabbed Mother’s arm. “She’s at home! I had her taken home!”

The moment they heard that, the whole group rushed out before the banquet was even over.
